That's it, control of her behaviour, keeping her in check, whether she needed it (to begin with) or not. The military relies on obedience/compliance and both Mike and Mary Beth (step-mom from Bella being ~4-6yo) are overachieving ex-military/fed workaholics that will presumably have intense levels of self-discipline. If Bella acted out at an earlier age it could have been in rebellion. As you say lacking a martinet at TTU could have quickly led to the symptoms we see e.g. extremely poor personal hygiene as rebellion, rapidly escalating behaviour etc. Bella implying steroid abuse for high school wrestling (that frankly boggles my mind) wouldn't have done her any favours in terms of behaviour or emotions either, but don't want to sperg about that shite, it's probably bollocks.
