I think Trump would have at least attempted to pull out by May and then whatever happened afterward wouldn't involve American lives, at least not like this. They would have had more time to pull out of the embassy, assuming they were going to leave it staffed to begin with.

There's a anecdote relayed in some article I read bemoaning the absolute state of the ANA a few years ago. Supposedly, an ANA commander and his Taliban counterpart were negotiating by phone and it just led to insults. The Taliban called the ANA a lapdog of the Americans, and ANA replied that Taliban was a lapdog of the Pakis. Taliban replies that at least the Pakis weren't infidels, owning the ANA libtard who is unable to muster a further response. America would have had to come in as either full on settler colonists or a Caliphate to 'win'.

The Taliban are mostly Pashtuns, and Pashtuns hate nothing more than being ruled by a foreign power. They simply won't have it and they'll keep fighting until that power is gone. Arabs, Persians, British, Russians, and now Americans all got BTFO by the Pashtun hatred for foreign rulers. The only reason Pakistan (mostly ethnic Punjabi) can control its own Pashtuns is because like the British before them, they mostly leave them alone except periodic reminders of who's boss.
