This is very interesting - if I’m reading this correctly, this is what we call the Hoskins effect.It happens when the immune system kind of gets fixated on the first version of the pathogen it sees. You see it a lot with flu - the body kind of imprints on the first version of the virus it sees. When it sees a different version of the flu it goes full steam ahead producing the first antibodies it did to that first infection, and so it doesn’t make the right antibodies to the new one. Putting it in very simple terms the body is reacting to a new version by making mainly antibodies to the old one. The body isn’t now less capable of learning how to deal with new versions.
What would be interesting is seeing how this effect differs in those who were infected, recovered and injected from those never infected but injected. The key question for the future is how bad it gets as the new versions diverge from the old.
