People bitching about the peace attempts were retarded. To "win" with the US's objectives the ANA would have to win militarily against the Taliban, which was never going to happen. The only two ways the US could have left Afghanistan in victory was either to just exterminate the majority of the populations of Afghanistan and Pakistan similar to what the Mongols did or to strike some kind of deal with the Taliban which would have allowed the US to leave while still saving face.

Its not a shock at how fast the Taliban took Afghanistan when the American allies pacifying the rural parts of the country are drug smugglers and warlords with literal harems of child sex slaves, what's shocking is the administration believed those people would fight to the death for a fucking month.
Empowering the worst scum and degenerates in Afghanistan is one of the many reasons why masses of the Afghan military immediately surrendered to the Taliban.

The other shocking thing is how modern American military doesn't fucking plan for anything anymore, not a single asshole thought it was a good idea to plan for an Afghan withdraw, it seems like most of the military leadership was relying on Afghan being a forever war and no president would actually pull the trigger on a full withdraw.
Up until the end of the Cold War military planners would autistically create plans for literally every scenario they could think of so they don't have to start from zero if something catches them by surprise.
I'm sure many of you have seen the invasion plans for invading Canada but there are entire archives of plans, everything from invading Mexico and South America, amphibious/airborne invasion of Mainland China, repelling a Soviet/Chinese invasion that may start with a nuclear first strike and what a withdraw from the islands would look like in that scenario, and many more.
