As a comic, I think of Dobson as being more like "Cathy," because I really hated that ugly-assed, unfunny comic and it always disgusted me when my eye glanced across that part of the comics page. Like Dobson, the main protagonist is a fat, slovenly spectrum-dweller who is so annoying she's the comics equivalent to fingernails on a chalkboard. Badly drawn, too, so that fits perfectly. ACK!

I think everyone who wasn't an alcoholic middle-aged woman with 30 cats during the 80's & 90's hated Cathy. When the Bloom County strip mocking you is more memorable than your comic, you suck at comics.

Dobson had all the unwarranted self importance and inability to perceive his own flaws of your average lolcow, but unlike someone like Chris he wasn’t autistic, mentally ill or had a broken ass family background.

Worse still, Dobson doesn't just have a normal background without mental illness, abuse, a broken home or whatever... he was handed everything on a silver platter. Everything. Every support, every opportunity.
And he was such an abrasive, lazy asshole that he pissed it away and throughout that entire process, he was being a high-and-mighty jackass about it, until his utter irrelevancy could no longer be ignored. And instead of overthinking his behaviour, he doubled down. Clearly, it wasn't his actions, it was how trolls misrepresented his actions. So even when people managed to show that indeed it wasn't actions taken out of context -oftentimes actions being even worse when considering the context!- he'd just say that it was trolls tricking him into these actions by posing as women/teenage lesbians and whatnot.

That's one of the aspects that makes him such an unlikeable asshole. He had every possible advantage to become an artist, things people dream of, and he was never grateful or graceful about it. He wasted what talent he had, he wasted what fans he managed to win over, he managed to fail as an artist and as a human being. And he still acted like someone who's input on any matter should be respected and heeded.

Imagine going your whole life and the only thing you achieve is becoming a KF lolcow. And not an important or the biggest or best lolcow at that, just a bland, vanilla lolcow. Dobson is that lolcow.

It is my understanding that every artist hopes to have a lasting impact on humanity. Not everyone wants to be on the same level as DaVinci, Rembrandt or Bach... some just want to create their niche and be venerated amongst a small crowd of dedicated enthusiasts. Some don't want millions of fans, they are content with a few hundred guys just really liking their products...

And now we have Dobson, who's biggest lasting effect on the world will be a couple entries in lolcow-centred encyclopedias, about 4000+ pages of shitposting on KF making fun of him and being the ultimate negative example of how not to act as an artist.

I think Dobson's lasting infamy is a real achievement. it was a perfect storm of right place, right time, right insanity. some of his comics have now maintained meme status across 2 generations of internet readers. like his pc vs mac has probably been scoffed at by millions of people. if Dobson ever comes to the very un-Dobson like conclusion that at least he made a mark on internet culture, I wouldn't deny him that consolation.

I dunno, gonna have to disagree that Dobson didn't have some form of either autism or cluster-B clusterfuck personality disorder, or both.

While some of his behavior could be explained by the excessive coddling and babying done by his mother, Dobson did at one point admit he inherited some form of mental problems from his mother (unspecified). He whined that he had depression, which is a form of mental illness, and was being treated for it (not very well, IMO, but whatever).

But what really convinces me he's low grade ass burgers (he's not enough of either a sped or a sperg that his parents or anyone else would have noticed he's a sperg/sped - in the grand scheme of things he wasn't even as bad as Moviebob during childhood, whose parents moved heaven and earth to find out what was wrong with their arrogant, narcissistic, crayon-eating demon spawn, and even they couldn't find out what was wrong with him, as autism diagnoses were reserved for the Chris Chans of the world back in the 80s and early 90s) sufferer is his interaction in the latter days with the "fake comic book convention" at his alma mater, MCAD. This is where he interacted with some women who later claimed he was sexually harassing/hitting on them. Now, this MIGHT be the ultra feminists taking shit out of context by reading human interaction through the lens of intersectional faminism, but the fact that Dob couldn't even conceive that his actions or words could be turned against him in that way, let alone that if these women weren't lying out their ass or misinterpreting him that he couldn't conceive of what his words meant to them, means there's something wrong upstairs. Could be any number of co-morbid cluster B clusterfucks going on, too.

To be fair, he did print multiple graphic novels, hell Formera was even put out by a publisher. But he never stuck with a project long enough to properly gain an audience. If it didn't immediately take off, he got bored and quit.

As has been said, his laziness was his biggest undoing.

In light defense of Dobbles, Formera flopped hard so it was worth abandoning. Doesn't excuse the other projects he half-assed and then dropped when they didn't give him instant fame and accolades. Which pisses me off because I would commit cold blooded murder for half the chances Dobson has gotten over the years.

It was one of the smoothest animations that he did. The few he did since then have been rough and choppy, like they're missing frames.
The only 'improvement' I see is that later animations he drew were in colour, and that's it.


On a side note, I find it kinda tragic that when he can be assed to do something animation-wise, it's to feed his fetish for lesbians (the Proposal video) or to kiss the ass of social justice warriors (The Adventure Zone video, note that one of the characters is a black lesbian whose design basically screams SJW.)

Pretty proud of finding this one. He didn't out right trace but he did use it as a reference. It's just a bad reference all together though. Batgirl is forcing the dude to take a selfie and Dobson version is amicable but the pose just doesn't reflect that. Which begs the question.....why didn't he choose some other reference drawing? well he did milk his depression for all he was worth, as well. But I think even if it were confirmed that he had autism (and I think the problem here is that Dobson doesn't want to be seen as a legit exceptional sped, so there's certain things he wouldn't glom onto either legitimately or as part of a grift), it's something he wouldn't bring up. He's never been tested for it however, as he admitted one time on tumblr, so it's an open-ended question, like that one about how many licks it takes to get to the center of the tootsie-roll pop.

There are some cluster-B clusterfuck disorders where some of the behaviors overlap with autistic behaviors, so there's that, as well.
