I think Trump, like a lot of people, thought most of our people were already gone and it was just some embassy and military left. I didn't realize it was possibly 10,000+ people. Which shows how horribly they botched this entire thing.

People are now realizing Kabul airport has one strip, surrounded by a city that it could be attacked from, while Bagram is all by itself with multiple strips and flat land.

The likely hope was all bar the most vulnerable would be evacuated with the eventual "draw down" and negotated national unity settlement. There's 2,500 US troops there, with probably 7500 PMCs and NGOs, then ladle in all the Afghan staff etc and you have tens of thousands easily. In the Trump plan, Americans (and likely UK forces) would've continued in an intel-and-support role for the ANA which was completely pulled a couple of weeks ago ready for the Great Fuck Off on Sept 11th because some dickhead felt it'd play nice on the cameras for a nice round 20 year aniverssary for a Biden-midterm boost he could coast on for "bringing them home to their families".

When I read about Bagram being abandoned in the middle of the night last month and locals already looting it I figured the government knew Afghanistan was fucked and had already quietly pulled everyone out ahead of time. And during that time they said white anger was the largest threat to Americans. THere were people in the DoD that knew this was going to hell and none of the top brass gave a single fuck.

There are two conclusions I can draw from listening to that statement and knowing about Britain:

1: It's another very poorly told lie from somebody who should be unemployed in the near future.
2: Our military is in much, much worse shape than I could have possibly imagined.

Shouldn't these statements at least be somewhat comforting?

Blair basically sold his soul to the American Neocons, effectively destroying Labor and casting it back into the wilderness of un-electability due to Blair being a huge fucking control freak who wanted SOME semblance of say in the invasions that followed, both to keep Britain in a major position in the post-911 status quo but also, if you feel charitable to Blair, to "keep Bush in check" as far as Blair basically thinking that SOMEONE had to keep friendly relationships with the Bush II administration and try and talk them down from doing some of the stuff they wanted to do now that they had an excuse in 911 to create Pax America worldwide.

The Iraq war that followed blew the middle east into a million pieces and then some, creating ISIS and creating a cascade effect that took down Libya and nearly destroyed Syria and radicalizing hundreds of thousands of Muslims worldwide towards terrorism and terrorist sympathizers. Removing Saddam in turn also further strengthened Iran and made them the true Muslim super power in the Middle East and has made Israel's hardliners even more powerful in the wake of Iran's ascension and the chaos and carnage around them.

It also fully broke the US military's back in two and turned a LOT of people against the US. Even with Obama's attempt to reset stuff, America is still reviled and mistrusted abroad. And it's impact on the global oil industry has made oil even more expensive and hard to find, since all of the pipe dreams of the Afghanistan and Iraq leading to more oil for everyone backfired HARD.

Finally, it created such a clusterfuck that Putin and his ilk were able to rebuild Russia back into a global super power while no one was looking. And create a situation where the US no longer has any sort of "moral high ground" against Putin, who can kill dissenters and make open plans to annex former Soviet territories and no one can do anything to stop him.

They will most likely have also been given something vague like "secure british nationals and Afghans who've worked for us."

It also helps when you clearly have a the local embassy staff being stubborn as fuck and using all of their Crown-Issued-powers to do what they feel is necessary and running interference for you.
