He grabs a map and starts looking for weak spots to infiltrate/exfiltrate. While he's doing that he calls in a CIA glownigger and asks him if they have any current intel.

Turns out the CIA didn't have ANY humint (human intelligence assets, aka PEOPLE) in Iran. Like, at ALL.

Sending the 82nd in has nothing to do with optics but two major reasons.

First there is a legitimate concern the Taliban might start shelling the run way. Not to kill anyone but to make the runway unusable and prevent evacuation or supplies getting in. So having troops who in that event can simply parachute in to reinforce the airport makes sense. Also if you even suggest the chance of an Airborne operation in a modern war you can see the 82nd's collective erection from the fucking moon.

Second the 82nd is the only large conventional unit that could get there fast enough to actually matter. The 82nd keeps a third of the whole division ready to be wheels up from Pope airfield within 18hrs of notification at all times and 18 hours is the no shit time the goal is 12 hours. The other 2/3 are a 48 hour timeline at all times. No other conventional unit can do this, The only other unit who can rapidly deploy like this are the Rangers and the SF Groups.

I still remember the gist of what was said: "The hardest choice you ever make in your career is whether to do the right thing according to your oaths and throw away your career, your livelihood, your reputation, or do what you are ordered and stand by silently as the wrong thing is committed."

I wonder if they still teach that?

The only other unit who can rapidly deploy like this are the Rangers and the SF Groups.

If that's true nowadays, then no wonder the military is so fucked up. If you can't be wheels up and gone in 48 hours, you have no right to be considered at full readiness.

For fuck's sake, there used to be Rapid Ready Brigades (a rotating assignment) where even REMF units had to be able to be at the airport within 4 hours of the alert being called, loaded into the plane and watching the Air Force or the air field dwonks loading their shit into planes.
