It's kind of interesting that there was a lot of talk about breaking up or regulating Big Tech at the beginning of the year, then it mysteriously died out. Shortly thereafter, we learn that Apple is developing software to search files on your phone, and that Facebook has a back-channel to the White House so they can request content removal. Makes you wonder what other deals were brokered.

Obviously the government is monitoring online communications in general, but this benefits them in a couple ways. First, since a private company is doing the snooping, the government doesn't have to worry about warrants. Secondly, you can gather all internet traffic but it's a serious pain to search through. For everything they're interested in, there are a billion things that are unrelated. These kind of targeted systems let them get at things much faster and easier.
