Binged part 3 of Kaiji this last week after watching both seasons a couple times months ago. Honestly wish I'd done so sooner, after getting over the initial hump of only somewhat understanding Mahjong, the stakes felt high and it was great seeing a new crazy asspull from Kaiji, especially since it felt a lot more grounded and realistic than tilting a fucking building.
The President was an great villain, too. I don't think I've genuinely resented anyone more than him (and the 45ers) before in fiction just because of how depraved, backhanded and cruel they are.
I've only got a few chapters into the Kazuya arc but I like him too.
I plan to read some more Fukumoto after catching up on Kaiji, if I preferred the more psychological parts of Kaiji, should I go for Kurosawa or Akagi next?
As the one guy who makes fun of Kaiji’s nose, I’d go with Akagi:

He does the Pathetic meme a lot better than the President.

I feel like that generation of hundreds-of-episodes-long Shonen anime where fans have to defend it with “b-b-but it gets good after episode 150, I swear!” is stuff that you can only really enjoy if you grew up with it as a kid. Like, if Naruto was the first anime I ever watched in middle school I’d probably think it was pretty sick, but I tried watching it recently and had basically the same experience as you. Holy fuck did it suck.
Most fans, if they are honest, have a "one-long-running-shounen-and-that's-it" policy. For me it was Dragonball. The weakness of all these series is the very nature of adaptation. Long talky sequences are more tolerable in the manga but when "faithfully" adapted in the anime lead to ridiculous things like an entire episode of Vegeta delivering a dying monologue.

we finally get a bluray of Kakegurui holy fuck
is it just japanese dub? i wonder if they'll redub it with a new english cast though the netflix dub will be burned in my mind.

is there an abridged edit of naruto out there? without goofy commentary or edits but just the meat. got past the exams to the seige on the village, pace was getting good and now its slowed down to crawl when suske and gara started fighting.

Is nyaa getting ddos'd? I get a Ddos-Guard screen when I try and access it.

Not seen anyone mention this, got around to watching the first run of the remake of Shaman King.

It feels weirdly worse than the original. I'm not sure if it's nostalgia goggles, the lack of certain music at moments I remember it in the original or something else. I'm hoping it does well enough that they adapt some of the stuff from the manga that never made it into the original anime run but I may skip it till that stuff kicks in.

why is a weird looking boy playing Faye, she's supposed to be a hot chick

Hot women are banned in western films, the only exception are women who were hot 20 years ago and are only decent since they spend more time putting makeup than Doug Jones
But she’s wearing a yellow vest! That means she’s the character! /sneed

It's because they took out literally every non plot critical scene, which meant all the funny and slice of life parts. Hell even plot critical stuff got cut down to brief wordless montages like Yoh going to the museum to visit Amidamaru's best friend. Like many good but structurally standard shonen, it's those moments that give Shaman King its soul, and being a show ABOUT soul the lack of it is especially jarring. It's reduced to a boss rush with little characterization. I assume this is because they're limited to a hard 52 episode count limit rather than just doing it season by season. The version of the series they're adapting is 35 volumes long.

It's funny how this happened compared to how Pierrot and Toei ruin long running shonen by slowing them down.

Sounds about right. The fact that they cut down the hitch hiking scene should be considered a crime.

But even the boss rush stuff they suck on. Tao Yúan felt substantially less interesting as a fight and not just because they decided not to use Brave Heart as the fight music. They're rushing the boss part of the boss rush.

There's a 20 year gap between the first anime and this one. If any animated series that old has arguably better fight scenes someone needs a kick in the backside.

It’s kind of crazy how expensive localized manga is compared to the Japanese prints, especially since most series don’t have a discounted box set. Being able to get the entire run of a 20-30volume manga for under or around $100 (like you can for a lot of imported Japanese stuff on eBay and such) I think it would be almost an impulse buy for any series I’m vaguely interested in and have read and liked the first 1-2 volumes digitally. But at $8-10 per volume, localized manga very much still feels like a collector’s item.

Please give us more box sets, I like reading paper copies and I literally want to give you my money… just not at $10 per volume.
