Apparently next to nothing was dumped into their army given the army (except a few generals I bet) hadn't been paid for five months this year.

the fact that the money never made its way to the rank and file soldiers doesn't mean it wasn't given to the army. probably most of it went into purchasing equipment from american defense contractors, and lining the pockets of corrupt bureaucrats and officers.

If we look back at the history, the solution could've been quite simple. God damn fortified cities! I don't think taliban has trebuchets

fortified city is useless if the men who are supposed to defend the walls just abandon their posts and surrender at first opportunity (which is what the ANA did)

There is the interesting case though of the Hui where the Han Chinese have little to no issues with them but got problems with the uighurs.

the hui are just han chinese who converted to islam at some point in the past
their loyalty still lies with beijing first, they never support foreign muslims over their own nation, they don't cause any trouble for the ccp, so the ccp in turn does not cause any trouble for them either.
the uighurs on the other hand are a distinct ethnicity, closer to kazakhs than to the chinese. they also have separatist ambitions (east turkestan nationalism) and unlike the hui they have been known to associate with international jihad in the past, which is a big red flag in the eyes of the ccp. also occasionally they carry out terror attacks against the chinese public, like running into a railway station and butchering random people with knives while yelling ALLAHU AKBAR FREE EAST TURKESTAN!!! so yeah it makes sense why the ccp is not nice and friendly to them like it is to the hui.

Ribbons were introduced as a practical alternative to always wearing your medals. But that purpose goes away if you're walking around with so many ribbons that it's near to annexing your neck.
