We don't have to speculate because we already have confirmation that he does do this. The drama with Lindsay Ellis exposed this to be true. We don't know if he went so far as to construct an entire boyfriend-girlfriend fantasy in his head. But he definitely thought that the two had a close friendship all because she took a photo with him at a convention years ago.

He legitimately was shocked when she called him out on Twitter. He 100% believed whatever bullshit he made up in his head regarding him and her being "colleagues" as he likes to put it.
