Let's pretend for one moment that he does die before the election, just for the funsies. What happens then? Will the nomination revert to option number 2, aka Bernie Sanders? Or will his running mate automatically replace him just the way Vice-President is supposted to step in after the Big Man in the White House chokes on a piece of matzo? Does he even have a running mate yet?

A threat I'm confident they could back up as well. Its incredibly likely that the Taliban are breaking out their stocks of Manpads now that they are taking to open control much more thoroughly. So odds are, if they were so inclined, they could back that threat up with a few guys rocking launchers visibly just to make it clear what consequences are. Don't even have to fire them, just make sure a few Journo's see and shit their pants at the implications.
Did the ANA have any modern manpads? A Soviet-era Stinger can probably take down a civvie plane though.

Came across this, I never read the book so I can't vet the excerpt, but it sure does rhyme:

The 'faxx' checkers are hilariously desperate on this one.

My Google resulted in snopes and some other scmucky site who both can be summed up as saying, "NO HE DIDN'T. AND HERE'S WHY-"

"-1. HE DID oppose the bill BUT NOT CUZ OF THE REFUGEES! It was cuz of the money!!"
"2. HE WAS ONE OF 17 OKAY. HE WASN'T THE ONLY ONE OKAY."

Sooooo... it's in fact true, not 'false'. Ah the word games, just so that headline readers will skim and ignore the truth. The lunacy of it all.

So this has been gnawing at me for a few days now and I'm not sure if it belongs here or in the thread about the Talibanistan shitshow, but whatever. Jannies, relocate as necessary.

Two questions for folks:
1) I have seen repeatedly the idea that somehow pulling out on 9/11 would be good optics. How? Why? We're slinking off with our tail between our legs, soon or late, so why does doing it on the 20th anniversary of the day Bin Laden cucked us so fucking hard matter?
He could go to ground zero on 9/11 and give a very 'solemn' speech while the narrative would be that he finally pulled American troops out and just like how only Obama could kill Bin Laden only he could bring the troops home. I'm sure they figured Afghanistan would be falling apart in the background but it would be too slow for the vast majority of Americans to care about and any criticism could easily be deflected as desperate neocon warmongering. The optics would be pretty good and very easy to spin positively, but as it turns out the Taliban were not willing to play along.

Almost certainly. The Americans equipped and trained the ANA to fight and operate like Americans, and such an air heavy doctrine recognizes the need to shoot down opposition aircraft. The ANA was supposed to be an actual military, not just an insurgency suppression force, and their armament would have reflected that. While wikipedia is hardly an authoritative source, the fact that it recognizes they had Strela's tells me that at the very least, its unlikely they were stripped of that firepower.

They don't even really need manpads though. Some of the Taliban are absolute artists with an RPG, and the most advanced aircraft in the world are incredibly predictable during their takeoff phase. And a Strela wouldn't struggle to lock onto anything flying at slow takeoff speeds, at initial takeoff altitude. They're thermal, not Radar, so fancy stealth materials aren't gonna protect them.

They are already scared of that possibility, and dropping flares taking off.

Military planes evacuating Afghans drop flares and make 'diving combat landings' amid fears of ISIS missile attacks as TWENTY die including girl, two, at Kabul airport in stampede to escape Taliban before US lifeline ends

  • At least 20 Afghan civilians have been killed in the past seven days in and around Kabul airport
  • The situation has taken a turn for the worse, with four Afghan women crushed to death on Saturday
  • Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul has been the focal point for thousands trying to flee the Taliban
  • MoD looking at establishing processing 'hubs' for Afghan refugees in countries such as Pakistan and Turkey
  • However, Defence Secretary Ben Wallace says Afghans fleeing the Taliban may have to escape themselves
  • It comes amid fears of an August 31 rescue deadline, when it is believed the US will pull its remaining troops
  • The 900 British troops in Afghanistan cannot remain without logistical support of 6,000 US soldiers in Kabul
  • They will therefore have to finish the evacuation before that point to allow them to safely escape Afghanistan

2) Why are any of my fellow Burgerfats who aren't Biden drones/TDS-suffering RINO lickspittles trying to defend the Pantshitter-in-Chief from rightly earned foreign mockery and condemnation? This is the greatest skedaddle of our military since goddamn 1st Bull Run (the original, and still greatest, Great Skedaddle) to my recollection. (I know, I know, Fall of Saigon, but I wasn't alive for that and as one of those American messes started by Democrats it gets no coverage in American history courses: they focus on the war crimes and the protests and little else.)
That the entire government of Afghanistan was going to collapse the nanosecond we pulled out was a foregone conclusion; the difference is that had we stuck to the timetable, not only would it have effectively given Trump the W after two decades of hand-wringing over it, but it would have effectively allowed the Dems to close the book on 9/11 instead. That shit would have been trumpeted to the heavens by the press, and it would have been the best opportunity for the Biden Admin to push its agenda.

The big secret is that the Biden Admin has been essentially out of political capital for some time. They did not get elected with a mandate; at best it was a hairline win. There is serious concerns about the administration's legitimacy, and doubts from both sides over the election. There are serious concerns over Joe Biden's fitness for the office, and that's not even getting into how his policies are wildly unpopular (no one sane wants lockdowns to return or vaccine mandates, but he's damn sure going to ram-rod them because it's what the elites want), the Biden Administration frequently make itself look bad (Jen Psaki is just the meme that keeps on giving), and are often at the point where no amount of spin makes it look good.

This is also why the Biden Administration's been so aggressive with shit it knows are going to get slapped down, like the eviction moratorium extensions. It doesn't matter if the shit they push gets stomped, they were trying to stall for time hoping the big win on Afghanistan would push them back into the green long enough to (hopefully) clinch the 2022 elections. They could assure that the press would only cover them positively, all they had to do was make sure that the retreat happened on their timetable and not Trump's.

They failed, as you've seen. They failed hilariously.

The Great issue of the World Optics & political capital .

If the Taliban blow up a plane mid take off or kill an American Soldier...Biden won't be able to show his face in public and the Pentagon will look like vapid idiots to Americans. The coverage of this event still isn't favorable and if we begin losing 'Treasure' in the next week they are done for. Media smells blood and are circling.

I wad reading the comments section on a the hill article about Blinken and it looks like the NPC's defendtheDNC.exe finally got updated, and its fucking weak. "T-this isnt Biden's fault, g-goys. DAMN DIRTY ORANJ MAN SURRENDERED TO THE TALIBAN A YEAR AND A HALF AGO." So Biden was doing the oranj man's bidding when he abandoned $90 fucking billion dollars of American arms and vehicles, effectively arming the Taliban for the next generation? It was Trump, who has been out of office for 7 months who ordered the secret midnight abandonment of Bagram airport, leaving behind aircraft and armor with their electronics in tact? Biden just went along with the "surrender" his hands tied by that dang dirty drumf?

I just watched the Pentagon briefing. Lots of "I haven't heard that" or "I'll get back to you on that" on the Kabul Airport. Especially infuriating was the "I don't know about that" regarding the bad blood between the 82nd and Paras.

When stories like this are making the round and our allies have lost confidence in the US there is nowhere Joe can go except OUT.

Yeah Trump made the deal... that's it. Everything you see is fallout from Trump's decisions.

As for why Joe failed to make any changes to a plan that wasn't his which he could tell was doomed from the start? They have no coherent answer. Maybe some hand-wringing about how Joe trusted the plan because he's a trusting sorta guy. He's never accountable for anything even though he was Vice-President for half of this war and has been in charge for 7 months

EDIT: This has only dawned on me having typed it out. Forget everything you've read in this thread. To a layman, the Vice President hears everything the President does. This war has lasted 19 years. Between 8 years with Obama and now 7 months as President, Joe Biden has the most experience dealing with the war in Afghanistan. Every aspect of it, the enemies, the civilians, you name it. He's undisputed, and yet it still ended horribly. You literally could not find another elected representative with more experience than him right now for this particular theatre and yet it's a catastrophe.
