Agreed. Trump is many things, but his huge ego has always been part of it. If the Taliban decided to play hardball like that I already expect the US Army to be in Afghanistan for a second round of scorched earth (along with the journoscum screeching about the forever war).
That said, that very trait also made him very predictable, and I think the Taliban would have respected such a show of strength and paradoxically much less likely to pull shit on him.
