This welding the gates shut thing highlights a big problem with the modern military.
The purpose of the military is not to avoid casualties. Its to accomplish goals and use force to achieve political objectives. Avoiding casualties is obviously a good idea but it seems to be run like the safety team at a construction site or power plant.
The goal supposedly in Afghanistan is to evacuate all American citizens. The only valid reason for closing the gates permanently is if there are no more available planes and letting them in would interfere with the operation. But it seems to just be an ass covering thing by the brass.
