Tabletop Roleplaying Games (D&D, Pathfinder, CoC, ETC.)

/tg/ is a garbage fire. I checked out a thread on creating a 2010s-punk setting and got nothing but sperging over fucking racial politics. I just wanted tips to help create my magitech Matrix-style action game you assholes!

Also on the topic at hand, when did people start bitching about "freakshit"? Was it just people showing up with gay tieflings or whatever? Because I've played like actual Vampires and stuff in the past. The only issue is that 5e sort of creates an environment where most characters just kinda feel like samey statblocks. It's never Orloth the Tiefling Wizard, who has demons whispering in his ear, but "My level 15 luck divination build" and actual real variations in races are kind of discouraged outside of stuff like the Dragonborn breath weapons for the sake of balance or the sake of people on Twitter.
You'd be better off starting a thread or asking here. People might make fun of you but you stand a better chance of getting constructive advice.

I'm not sure what they mean with "freakshit". Despite my occasional ranting in defense of human characters, I genuinely don't mind people playing non-humans. Even the really weird and exotic races. If they have an interesting character concept to play with, they can go ahead and play it with my full blessings.

What annoys me is when they make characters that are literally only the sum of their class, race and pronouns. Or characters that don't fit in the setting. Or when they complain that their highly exotic character is being treated differently just because they are (gasp!) different. People who just want the good without the bad (or worse: the looks without anything else) annoy me to no end, because it's so much more interesting to take the whole package and make it work.

You want to play a Tiefling? A literal demon-blooded creature with magic in your veins? Expect to be treated with mistrust. That's not a problem, either. You can play it off in so many different ways, you'd be spoiled for choice. You could have your character be annoyed by it and try to prove the commoners wrong. You could have your character revel in that mistrust. You could have your character be bitter. They could try to hide their demonic ancestry. Or they could flaunt it. Or they could try to pass it off as a curse. So many fucking options, you could make a whole party of the damn things and have them all have completely different outlooks about their own existence as Tiefling. But nope, most just play them as humans with horns and tails.

Shit, even just playing a bog-standard high elf. You're likely older than everybody else in the party, combined. You don't need to sleep. All other races feel clumsy compared to your natural elegance. You were raised among the trees and the other races' buildings all look crude and bulky to you. There is fey blood coursing through your veins, granting you powers the mundane races don't have. The children of other races might even learn how to handle a weapon, but every child around you was trained in the blade and the bow, with great skill to show for it. Everywhere you go, humans stare at you with awe, fear or envy in their eyes. All together, elves can be extremely alien creatures. But no, everybody just plays them as effete humans with pointy ears.

Likewise, you want to make a character with a sexual orientation outside the norm? Man up and play the consequences. Put some effort into it, you fucking hacks.

/tg/ makes you feel like you're schizophrenic because it's the same goddamn bullshit over and over and over with no end. People have been bitching at each other fruitlessly over the same topics and memes (e.g. "freakshit") for literal years with no progress in the discourse. You can't even call it discourse because it's totally static, everything eventually circles back to the same few topics because even if there's an interesting conversation someone will inevitably link it to a thought terminating meme topic. There's a core of mega autists who can't stand anyone playing games in ways they don't like and the group is large enough that you can never escape them in non-general threads. There's no use in using it for anything but general threads; I check out /gurpsgen/ occasionally but avoid it otherwise.

TL;DR /tg/ is a madhouse and you will go insane if you try to engage with it in good faith

Well the elf character with dual weapons and an edgy disposition has been annoying since before Drizzt clones were a thing, and I don't doubt modern 5e is worse with that shit. There's always been people making their own unique and special snowflakes and taking it to far. And I can see how modern 5e can be worse with that shit. But it's just one of those things you have to try and manage.

A bunch of the new 5e expansion races are garbage. The Firbolg or whatever the gay north trolls are, the bird people, and the furries. Several of the subclasses also have origins that call out 5e default gods/settings IIRC. Oh and Aasismar/Deva

Tieflings are not freakshit but they are usually played by annoying snowflake faggots so they might as well be.

I don't know why the term freakshit is being used so much here over this single day, but I know the people who invented that term should take a shotgun strap-on since it reminds me of Lee "Barneyfag" Goldson.

I just play whatever the hell I want. Human? Sure. Elf? Did that. Hell, even have a Diopsid (giant bugman) Necromancer idea whose gimmick is he wants to become a lich purely because there's too much to explore when you only live to be like 25, even with no sleep.

Before Drizzt elves were just mage knights with a single sword.

I have a character idea for a future game that's a firbolg trying to undo the ancestral curse that turned his people into a bunch of dopey gay retard giants. Goddamn crime what they did to them.

Also, unpopular opinion I'm sure, but I like a lot of the so-called "furry" races because I enjoy playing beastfolk. I just wish they had statted out playable Giff and Thri-Kreen.

I think all my time on the internet has proved "suffer not the furry to live" to be too correct of a stance to change it now.

Lycans aside, Beastkin as playable characters just really tend to not work for most settings unless they are one-off things like "Prince turned into human-sized amphibian", "God selects dog as avatar", etc.

Naturally its 100% fine for Swords-and-Whiskers Mouseguard sort of settings.

Works for mine because I set my campaigns in Norrath (aka, Everquest setting). Anything that doesn't fit from a D&D source has either been reflavored to fit the setting (Aasimar and Tieflings are human subraces with magical affinities and Aaracokra are harpies) or written off as some kind of (usually illegal) magical experiment. Less work than the cosmology as the outer planes are designed around deities rather than alignments.

I started doing some self-reflection lately. Is it normal for a guy to enjoy playing as women? I’m not even talking about ERPs. Out of the characters I’ve enjoyed playing as and/or creating the most, two of them were guys. The rest were a cowgirl themed magical girl thats just Regina George but southern, a magical girl who’s still traumatized after her mom’s ex boyfriend’s abuse, a pixie corrupted by dark magics, and the rape child of a wealthy merchant’s wife (who was happily adopted by said merchant).

Now I’m legit wondering if playing as any of these characters is normal at all, and since most of /tg/ is nogames, I figured here is the only other place I can talk to about it.

Yes, it's normal. Don't fall into the intersectional trap of thinking "only X can play X". Despite the name, roleplaying is more like just writing. You're writing a character's actions and reactions on the spot. So unless you're questioning whether or not it's normal for a writer to enjoy characters different from themselves, the question is pointless. So long as you don't make it a weird sexual thing like some coomers out there do, you're fine.

Agree with @Corn Flakes -- there's no rule that says 'you must play this based on your RL race-gender-creed-fucktarget'. I know girls who've played guys and guys who've played girls. As long as you're not going Magical Realm bullshit, nobody cares.

It's just more current gen shit. I prefer being around my circle of old fogies.

With the exception of the one friend thats gay, most of my table tends to play as regular dudes, the one exception to this was when we played 4 sessions of Cyberpunk and for some reason more than half of them just made futuristic waifus. There was never an issue with this and it never got weird, ain't nothing wrong with playing whatever character you'd like, this aint modern progressivism.

However, your female characters do sound kinda degenerate
