Let's pretend for one moment that he does die before the election, just for the funsies. What happens then? Will the nomination revert to option number 2, aka Bernie Sanders? Or will his running mate automatically replace him just the way Vice-President is supposted to step in after the Big Man in the White House chokes on a piece of matzo? Does he even have a running mate yet?

The biden admin lacking political capital does mean a lot here too, as it ensures they will have a hard time saying lolno to the judgment.
Keep in mind, this is basically a "negative" decision with no upside. They had to condemn a ton of people to eviction. But they did it, against a hostile Admin. That's a good sign that if something like election federalization comes to their desk they'll strike it down.

Does anybody remember why Obama picked Joe Biden.

I've been pretty politically "aware" since I was a child (as weird as that sounds) and I remember Joe getting made fun of all the time by both sides. Isn't he the guy that suggested we plebs fire a warning shot directly upwards into the air instead of shooting intruders, which is illegal?

I think you're giving normal people too much credit. A lot of them get their news from aggregators like yahoo or msn, which mostly host news from sites like salon/vanity fair/vox/AP/Reuters/etc. Most of the journalists who write articles for these places are part of that tiny minority of a tiny minority that are the hardcore leftists on twitter.

Case in point, the rest of my family more or less has TDS and a vast majority of the opinions that they espouse match the same views you see on twitter. I know for a fact that one of them goes nowhere near twitter and gets all his news from reading whatever pops up in the home screen of microsoft edge and watches the nightly NBC news religiously. The people feeding these news sources are those same tiny minority of a tiny minority. I'd argue a lot white collar office workers are the same. They're probably reading whatever pops up in their browser homepage. Explains the reason why Mozilla (which makes nothing but a browser) went out of their way to "curate" their "homepage". They know the extent of their reach with that homepage.
The vast majority of normal people ignore the media entirely, with a trust level at 28%, people just hate the media. Mostly they get their news through the grapevine. For reference, the total user base of twitter in the U.S. is only ~37 million, of which only 10% of that are actually regular users. The number who get their information from media is higher than the number who use Twitter... at about 60 million.

Out of a voting populace hovering around 200 million.

Your family is highly hooked into the media, but the vast majority of Americans are not.

Few reasons:

He was Obama's Pence, a stodgy old white man who was meant to appeal to the Establishment.
He was an avowed Catholic, and that gave appeal to some evengelicals.
He was easily controllable, and absolutely no threat to Obama's power.

I'm truly amazed at how someone who has been in government for so many decades is so fucking bad at the job.
This isn't an attack on you, but, lmao fucking seriously?
It's a longstanding rule of the universe that the longer someone spends in government the more they become either malicious or useless. Biden, being who he is, opts to embody both in equal measure.

I was still in early HS, but I remember it had to do with Biden being an establishment “experienced” figure, but wouldn’t rock the boat and outshine Obama (there was talk of HRC being Obama’s VP, but the primary was brutal and they’ve had bad blood ever since).

Mitch has been in there for decades too, got all his judicial picks and has withstood the MAGA tide.|

So I mean, yeah lmao fucking seriously.

I'm not. Biden is that oh-so-rare instance of someone beating the Peter Principle by being promoted beyond his level of incompetence. For the record, the highest office he legitimately held was the famously-toothless vice presidency; he would never have been President at all without the help of the 4 AM ballot fairies and some insanely corrupt judges.

They had to, since the last time this crossed their desk they gave them a softball 'try again but not this way, this is illegal as fuck' and the Admin came back with the same stupid shit they were told explicitly not to do. If they let it pass they would cede all the authority they have and show themselves as robed bitches.

There is a fairly basic concept in politics, but life in general. The more you back someone into a corner, the easier it is for them to decide to fight back, "The cornered rat bites the cat".

By forcing SCOTUS' hand, the admin makes it easier for SCOTUS to justify to itself future actions against them.

The grapevine has to start somewhere. Those 60 million people getting their information from media are getting it from the same media that is full of the 10% of 37 million twitter users. Those 60 million people then inform the other 140 million people that don't participate.

And regarding the media trust statistics, how much of it is truly "all" media. I have no basis for this statement (you can reject it outright as a result) but I wouldn't be surprised if most of responses were something like "I don't trust the opposite party's media" and that's categorized as "no trust in media".

I miss him as president. He didn't sound like he was going to drop dead any second.

Avowed catholic my ass. I don't know a single catholic form my personally life except maybe one who like Biden every?

He was added to the ticket for his FOREIGN POLICY experience because Obama had nothing more than a well attended talk given in Berlin as experience.

At that time, Biden had been in charge of the Senate Foreign Relations committee for several years (over a decade). Biden as a Senator running that committee was gung ho for Bush to start the Afghanistan war. He was either the leader of or the minority leader of Foreign Relations until he took up as VP where it was one of his primary duties.

SO FOR THE NEWBIES OUT THERE: Biden's only time NOT deeply involved with the Afghanistan War was the 4 years that Trump held office. He didn't blunder into this in Jan 2021. In fact, he was well aware of Trump's agreement in Nov 2020 and had since that time to determine how to meet the May 1st deadline. Even after the Jan 20th inauguration he had 3 months to get the troops out during the SLOW SEASON (no fighters and no fighting going on). Instead he picked to do it in less than 2 weeks at peak fighting season.
