There are a couple of possibilities, but the answer is almost certainly "smart phones". You used to have to sit down and spend time on the computer if you wanted to be on the Internet, and for the most part, you had to consciously seek out specific communities if you wanted to find them. This led to many communities, all of which were full of people who specifically selected those communities to participate in.

Now, every faggot and his two mothers can pull out their phone and take two seconds to act like they're offended on one of ~8 large social media sites. Then their phone will let them know how many people "like" their grift, short circuiting their dopamine system (null talked about this feeling on his last episode of MATI).

There are other reasons besides, like the monetization of grievance culture by the general public and the news media in particular (something that groups like the ADL have been doing for a very long time), but all of it is enabled by the shorter attention spans and instant gratification smart phones provide.

There has also been a false consensus constructed by Big Tech, as "community guidelines" cause normal people to self-censor or otherwise be actually censored. It's like an MMA fight where one fighter starts with their legs broken--hardly a surprise that the other guy always "wins", is it?
