late to the party but imo phil isn't a cult leader, for OIC and SnowKarl he is (or was for SK) a means to an end for attention from 2 communities on the internet. If it wasn't phil it would be another lolcow or thot. He's just that deep into denial and that delusional that all the cult-like talk is just him trying to convince himself of his own bullshit.

Looking at his chat when he's going over his cult speak no one is buying it. Sure you have people like SMB, KG and Derich but to put it a way phil would understand throw enough shit at the all and some of it will stick.

On the whole "cult" discussion: I don't think you can apply conventional analysis when you're talking about literal retards.

Phil has gotten a few new members, including Cenk and some left wing Twitch streamer, Hassan.
Even if this isn't OiC, who is active in chat and talking about the names used, it's clear that someone is making socks specifically to hit the members goal and Phil isn't batting an eye at how obvious it is, or making any mention of it. I strongly suspect the lower 260 goal was designed to do this so that Phil wouldn't risk not running his Hallowe'en marathon, and that's a number close enough to where he was for one person to hit with socks.

We hit 261 with OiCIsTheBestModerator rolling it over. Master of subtlety.
The next goal is 285, I doubt it's a lock because that's a big jump in effort and Phil doesn't really care about letting people pick his costume since it's just the 'illusion of choice' anyway.

So congrats on that organic growth, big guy. Not even hiding the farce now.

"Support" is another word that the Goutosphere has ruined for me. Phil's made it into some vague buzzword that's important yet also not.
"Support's been good! Support's been slow!" yet you never hear exactly why he needs so much support outside of "muh groceries and bills" that every other streamer has yet don't ask for $10k a month. It's a nice flowery term for "this guy just threw hundreds of dollars at me today!".

4 days into September and he gets 30 new ones. All accounts with no profile pictures and seem generic as fuck and don't even chat in his chat. Congrats on hitting that goal "organically" Phil.

I think he honestly does believe someone might turn up to troll him, though the main reason is that anything interferes with his begging narratives.
He may be justified - I could see a troll possibly turning up to film him or something.
If he has a shred of intelligence, he'd realize the much more likely and significant threat would be 'bumping' into his obsessed mod who may live within driving distance...

Phil was just subtly checking his phone while there was some dialogue in the game.
He's either got a guide on there, or that was the check to see which of the SilentBob/OMM/Bobajo names tipped which amount ahead of break. That would make sense, given that we're just 30-40 minutes before his break when he'll announce the tip.

Something about the setup with this chair means that it's becoming hilariously obvious when he is fucking around with his phone. I think we saw that he keeps it in the cupholder of the chair, which means that he's glancing down and away from the TV screen to look at the phone and thinks he is being sly about it.
