Schaffrillas. Everything I could say about the reason why has already been said by others a couple pages back (except for the bit where he had a big anti-capitalism rant on a video about Ratatoing of all fucking things, surprised that wasn't brought up).
Thing is though, I saw his faggotry coming a mile away. Ever since I got wind that he was going through college, aka THE breeding ground for social justice nutjobs, and started throwing in a bunch of theatrical reviews (theater people are chiefs among fags), I knew the double red flags were a sign that it was only a matter of time before his YT content would get infected. And sure enough...
Since he's been brought up again, I think I'll extend why I no longer enjoy his content.
For a lot of content creators, they know their sense of humor, at some level, is childish and cringey. Schaffrillas seems to be no different. His videos are filled with memey/childish content meant to keep a viewer in a more lax state that allows for his writing to be worse in quality without having to face immediate criticism. While I don't think this is 100% deliberate and that this is just who he is, it allows him to coast on bad thesis statements, evidence & the articulation of it, and especially research. Cosmonaut Marcus does the same thing but rarely has the same lows as Schaffrillas in consideration to frequency and severity of them. While this post isn't about him, I brought him up as a reference because you're able to see it much more easily when you watch his video on JoJo and then watch MangaKamen's response essay to it. However, back to Schaff and examples directly from him.
- Bit of a strange take, but the actual choices in media he decides to speak about. It's a lot of things made for children or were broadcasted on channels meant for them. I'm not going to sugarcoat my opinion in that adults who should have grown out of watching kid's shows don't exactly see a lot of criticism thrown towards the shit they're watching, outside of the ones that are more liminal* such as Steven Universe and Korra. In fact, some random criticism videos can really be boiled down to "lol, not quite as good as we remembered it amirite?" However, the opposite is also true. Because of the lack of respect in the entertainment community and critical analyses from video essayists, positive videos of kid's shows can really overshoot how good one of them is. It's why he's able to perform just fine on videos like Steven Universe, the Owl House, Chowder, and Mitchells vs. Machines. But the moment he goes toward something more universally respected like Better Call Saul he gets torn to shreds.
- He uses a lot of meme/kiddie shit in more edited videos. The most obvious example of this is his sponsor preview literally just being Arthur walking on the globe, except he superimposed his profile picture over Arthur's head. Almost all of his thumbnails are just relevant characters making silly faces, and/or have an irrelevant character present that's only there for a silly reason. Of the past 30 videos starting with "The Suicide Squad & Vivo - Are They Good or Nah?" I counted 19 thumbnails that reasonably apply to this, and 21 if you wanted to be an ass about it. In edited videos however, they're fucking everywhere. Self-conscious humor about yourself doesn't remove the fact that you're still not great at writing.
Schaff, like I previously stated, is a goofy person. However, it's becoming more clear that he wants to be taken more seriously and seems to want to move a bit away from being seen as a le funny memester. However, what he doesn't understand is that when you create diatribes against ideologies and/or institutions, you shouldn't be seen as a clown when you do it.
I'm writing a 650+ word post about someone who I don't even like. I'm ending this post here. The note under this was written before I decided to stop writing.
*I use this word as it's defined by Google (1] ".
relating to a transitional or initial stage of a process." and 2] "occupying a position at, or on both sides of, a boundary or threshold."). The purpose of using liminal specifically was to identify that these shows exist as the final rung of children's media while simultaneously being the first rung of post-pubescent media. However, I only state this because that's what they were obviously made for the creative team themselves and the teenagers who would end up watching it. Both of the shows in my opinion are at times incredibly childish, shallow, or have themes that aren't appropriate to teach children yet.
