The state I was born in and my parents, grandparents, and great+ grandparents built families and lives in really no longer exists. I wonder if this how Libyans/Syrians feel to an extent...
Now I need to decide whether to stay and deal with what my ancestral homeland has become, or attempt to flee like many others (and deal with the stigma of being a colonizer, despite being "one of the good ones" lol). Maybe I should refer to myself in casual conversation as an Arizonan to blow off suspicion since I lived there for several years? Next few decades are going to be interesting in this part of the country...

Speaking as a former Ohioan/Buckeye who fled with his family to Texas shortly after high school (Ohio is a shithole - except Cincinnati - but for rust belt reasons, not for being a one-party state like Cali), you can adapt. I certainly feel much more state loyalty to Texas because this is where I feel like I truly 'grew up' as a person, in a sense. My life has largely taken the course it has because of Texas. A part of me will always be a buckeye but in terms of life experience, Ohio was more of a waiting room.

My kids' needs came first. Kids of disabled CA vets get free college (community college, California State University, University of California) tuition. Had kids attend/graduate from all three types of schools. Oh, well, I'll get some extra plays on tomorrow night's Powerball - $432 million. Then back home to TX. Have lived in CA many years but have never claimed it as home. You can see why.
