It seems like most of these sad sack dorks gape their maw and make this fake ass insult of a smile, when the social connotations demand an exaggerated reaction but they're not feeling it really. A true shrigma defaults to a thizz face in these scenarios.

To be fair, this looks more like he was shot in the middle of him saying something. His facial muscles suggest speech rather than fullblown soygape.

It's not a fear grimace. Humans share a lot of qualities with other primates, but we also have a lot of social cues that other primates do not have. For example, if you were to smile at a gorilla, it would kill you as showing teeth is a major threat to gorillas, yet we smile all the time and showing teeth is a sign of familiarity, especially when we're happy. In humans, showing teeth is a social cue that is meant to make people feel more at ease, the exact opposite of gorillas.

Men are physically, mechanically, not supposed to be open their mouths as wide as women. (HEYOOO), the soyboy smile/open mouth expression, is a complex behaviour. The men who make such a face have extremely low testosterone, it is beneath even beta males, it's a very feminine behaviour. It is "male" duckface. It is something that a biologically healthy male can't even do, I've tried in the mirror, and I can't actually make this face. My wife believes it is an expression of submission, but I disagree. In 99.99% of the photos these people publish to the internet, they're in the safest, least threatening situations (as per the numale's obsession with safety and civilization) imaginable.
I believe the beta male smile is just a symptom of low testosterone coupled with social retardation / living in a society which punishes "bullying" and acts of violence that used to be used to enforce social norms. 30 years ago anyone making this face would be bullied/beaten up until they stopped making their peer group look weak.

Are just some of the other signs of higher estrogen/lower testosterone levels in men. This is just female behaviour manifested from a male mind. Women do the same thing except it's acceptable when they do it.

There's a reason you've seen this face less frequently after it's been mocked so thoroughly. Only really oblivious people do this any more, like Jack Scalfani.
