I can't believe that after literally years away, I pop back in for a goddamn moment to find Jake saying something stupid enough to provoke me to wade back in.

Fish Eye is a crossdresser. A male. He calls himself male. Other characters call him male. This is literally never in dispute. He's just part of a certain era of anime where very pretty male characters would dress like women and get humorously "mistaken" for them.

His nonsense about a "bad localization" is bunk. I saw the entire run on VKLL fansubbed VHS way back in the before times, coupled with the bastard bits of Japanese a budding weeb picks up.

Jake posts pictures of the character in dresses, saying "no cis guy would dress like that," ignoring that's *exactly* how Fish Eye self-identifies. He says he can't be in drag, because "drag is a performance about empowerment," neglecting the fact that there are other reasons why a man would dress like a woman.

If he's a pervert. Which other characters DO call Fish Eye.

Jake uploaded his missing stream from last week (only an hour), and this week. It sounds like there's been unspecified stormy seas for our spheroidal warrior lately.

Monday 6/3/2024:
Jake says that he'd been up for 30 hours, after a "rough weekend" and then a "weird night".
He said had been "killing some time waiting for someone to show up to talk for stuff", but they didn't make it. "A lot went down, none of it pleasant".
He says "I'll also be tired next week for different reasons".
Nothing interesting gameplay-wise.

Monday 6/10/2024:
Trouble continues - Jake says "I have really had a rough couple days", and that he had a "weird sort of week".

This time Jake plays his beloved Master System, which he had when "growing up poor as a little girl" :story:
Amusingly, Violet plays "Zillion", which notorious card-carrier Jake Alley made a fansite for back in the day.

Possible indicator of health issues: at the end Jake says he's going to "try to eat something and then pass out". Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, does this look like a man who usually has to try to eat things?

Jakestream Monday 6/17/2024:
Nothing much interesting gaming-wise, though he played some furry game "Armello" because someone told him it was good. Of course he only knows furries.

We might have a clue to his troubles too: at one point he takes a break because "I am going to eat a cookie because I'm getting a little, like, low-blood-sugary".
I mean, this is Jake so take it with a grain of salt (or sugar), but it would be utterly unsurprising if he did have The Beetus.

Someone seems to have been "throwing around a lot of subs" onstream too - he's up to 130 followers on Twitch now and "might get a paycheck, yay". Wonder if this is more of that mysterious hot air that's kept Jake's montgolfier inflated for years.

that original batch of FFXIV recaps/explainers were really a watershed moment for me as a violetologist, because he'd finally written something i simply wouldn't or couldn't read. i thought i was hardcore, but it wasn't enough. jake found and exceeded my limits

I had an odd thought yesterday. I was reading about some of Jennifer Diane Reitz’ comics and it occurred to me that they have some striking similarities to Jake’s own venture into the medium, Slime World.

Here’s a Slime World comic.

Three things strike me. One is the retro pixelated art style, which JDR was very fond of.IMG_9130.jpeg
The second is the plain white background, another JDR trait.

And the third is the subject matter. JDR’s comics, particularly Unicorn Jelly, feature gelatinous creatures, much like Jake’s “slimes.” But these jellies can disguise themselves as women, in a clear metaphor for transition - JDR being a troon.

As everyone knows, a recurring theme in Jake’s work is the concept of being transformed into a woman via a magical transformation potion, and this is something that gets used in Slime World.

I guess what I’m saying is, is it possible that JDR made Jake troon out?

You might be onto something there. JDR is like the OG crazy internet tranny, way before it got popular, and Jake is the right age to have been a teenager on Tumblr/Livejournal when his crazy was at its peak.

JDR also wanted to be a game dev despite having no patience to learn any skills, resulting in the infamous "Kokoro Wish" comic where he tried to guilt-trip his other half into programming a video game for him so he didn't have to bother. Iirc, JDR owned some early website (can't remember what sort of website it was) that he sold for several million dollars near the beginning of the dotcom bubble and blew the entire windfall on anime figurines, which is also something Jake would probably do.

Someone should do an OP in the "lolcows of history" on JDR, a lolcow very ahead of their time. Sadly most of the information is on defunct websites like PoE or Livejournal. SomethingAwful used to make fun of him a lot back when that sort of thing was allowed over there (that's how I know about him), and no doubt that has all been purged. I was late to the JDR bandwagon (though JDR, along with JustinRPG, ADF and of course Chris and their coverage on SA was what got me into the whole "lolcow" thing), so I think we'd need a genuine oldfag who knows the lore more than I do.
