I'm not sure if that means surgeries for all ages it's a bit ambitious but it's still hormones at least for adults

Institutional compromise and profit: Pro troon doctors got themselves into positions of power - med schools, insurers, hospitals - along with their cronies and began pushing this stuff aggressively. Then at least in the US our insurance system pays providers based mostly on patient throughput, so a population that needs a large number of treatments for life is ideal from a financial perspective.

Am I missing something here? The linked article only seems to discuss treatments for minors, not adults (though hopefully Oz will cross that bridge soon enough . . .).

What Anthony fails to realize is that this is one of the few things Trump is doing to sell himself to the masses. This is the will of the "Silent Majority". This is the popular shit people love. Let people pay for their own transitions, as they have in the past and should resume doing. These wishy-washy cosmetic hangups should be for adults capable of consent and should certainly not be on the taxpayers' dime.

Out of all the controversial stuff (not taking a stance on his actions but by the literal meaning, "controversial" as the adjective "divisive and creating disagreement") his administration has done, this is his golden goose. This is what the people want and this is his silver lining and/or best selling point, depending on where you land politically. My vaguely liberal ass can say "at least the trains troons run on time pay on their dime".

You're right and this is the kind of damage that will take decades to undo: Trump's order + the response to it have made it clear that troons' claim public opinion is on their side is a load of BS, while troons' decision to die on the hill of gender treatments for minors undercuts any argument that these treatments are not a big deal or backed by The Science (tm). They've always been a tiny minority of freaks, Trump proved it with a few statements that would have been uncontroversial in the 2010s, and now their political influence is rapidly collapsing.

Can the Associated Press explain to me, please, what on earth its obviously-meant-to-be-a-slur "populist" means, and how it is different to "democratic"?

From the context, "populist" seems to mean "democratically-elected politicians making policy that the majority of the electorate wants".

But only if the policy is right-of-centre. Otherwise, it isn't anything so nasty as "populist". Left-of-centre policy is just "democratic".

I think we will need legal commentary on what the fallout will mean. And I don't trust the insane Scottish legislature to amend the legislation as much as possible to make it do what they wanted (including removing 'sex' from the Equality Act)
 
As best as I can tell, the legal justification was that having "woman" not refer to biological sex in the Equality Act (which governs anti-discrimination stuff) would cause large parts of it to make absolutely no sense, the stuff referring to maternity and pregnancy for example.

There's still legal protection for transgenders from discrimination, but this is now solely on the basis of them being trans, rather than also being covered by provisions covering women.

The overall message that they seem to be trying to send is that this is just technical legalese that will make no meaningful difference to anyone, but I'm not sure I buy that. An official legal distinction has been made between trans women and natal women, a line in the proverbial sand. I don't think anything like this could have happened a few years ago.
