Wagner College confirms transgender fencer at center of controversy is no longer on women’s team (archive)

When asked why Sullivan no longer competes on the women’s fencing team, Wagner College Spokesperson Jim Chiavelli provided the following statement: “We are in full compliance with NCAA and NEC rules and regulations. The fencer is not a member of our fencing team.” He noted that Sullivan is not doing interviews with the press.

It appears that stories on Wagner College’s website that mentioned Sullivan and tournaments she had competed in have been removed.

UC Davis Asked San Jose State About Best Way To Bring Trans Athlete Onto Team

(Archive)
According to documents obtained by OutKick through a public records request, Melissa Hughes – Associate Athletics Director at UC Davis – emailed Laura Alexander – Senior Associate AD at SJSU – inquiring about a potential transgender student-athlete at UC Davis.

"We have a prospective student athlete who is transgender, and | was told you have a current student athlete who is transgender," Hughes wrote in the email, sent on Sept. 16, 2024. "Primarily | would like to know what you may have done with respect to education and counseling leading up to the student athlete coming aboard."

A male student has just won gold in the Girls Varsity High Jump at a Portland Interscholastic League meet in Oregon. Zachary "Liaa" Rose of Ida B. Wells High School cleared the jump 4 INCHES higher than the second and third place female competitors.

(2/2) The Portland Interscholastic League appears to have allowed Rose to compete at a different time than his female competitors. While at the meet,

Trans woman who joined University of Nottingham women's hockey team hits back at online trolls

A trans woman is taking action against online trolls after an image of her posing with her fellow players in the University of Nottingham's hockey team went viral on social media.

Rachel Saunders, a rights researcher at the University's School of Law, began her transition when she was 17 years old and started HRT (hormone replacement therapy) with the support of her GP at 18.

The mature student, 42, who suffers from alopecia and insisted on her X account that she has 'never been a man', joined the institute's hockey team alongside younger teammates last year before moving to the city's Boots Hockey Club.

Now, the goalkeeper has joined forces with two other trans and non-binary hockey players to launch a legal bid through the UK courts to fight against England Hockey's new policy that bans transgender women from competing in the female category, saying she wouldn't 'feel safe being forced to play alongside men'.

She is also believed to be considering what action to take against online trolls who have made 'defamatory' allegations about her actions in the Nottingham team.

'This is a sport all three of us passionately love playing, and due to personal safety concerns none of us feel safe being forced to play in an “open” category alongside men,' claimed the PhD candidate, who says she has 'never played men's hockey'.

Rachel - who is outspoken online in the face of critics, some of whom disapprove that she uses the same changing room as her teammates - is looking to raise a staggering £100,000 to 'cover the costs of a full trial' through her GoFundMe page.

'In the 25 years I have been around the sport and in the 11 seasons I have been playing not a single person has raised an issue with me or my teams about me being trans,' Rachel told FEMAIL.

In a bid to address transgender and non-binary participation, England Hockey announced in January that they were establishing two competition categories: female and open - the latter welcoming all participants.

The new policy, set to take effect on September 1, aims to 'ensure everyone can participate in the playing of hockey in a fair way', said the governing body.

The review of the previous policy began in July 2023, incorporating guidance from the Sports Councils' Equality Group.

England Hockey said: 'Based on the current available evidence, and that hockey requires the physical capabilities of strength, endurance, speed and acceleration as key factors for success, hockey is considered a gender-affected sport.

'Based on this evidence, we have determined that the Trans and Non-Binary Participation Policy should restrict trans participation in order to secure fair competition.

'We are committed to supporting all affected players to ensure they find the right path for them to continue to participate in hockey.'

However, Rachel said that 'blanket bans are wrong for grassroots sports, ultimately harming all women and non-binary people'.

She said: 'Trans women are welcomed and valued members of their teams, put in the training and effort alongside their teammates, and as such to exclude them simply because they are trans ignores the actual reality of hockey as a sport.

'Hockey has always welcomed trans people without any issues, and the new policy excludes trans women from women's hockey without considering this history or the context in which we play.

'Our campaign seeks to protect trans inclusionary sport for all women and non-binary folk, as the sport is there for everyone.'

Writing on her GoFundMe page, she added: 'We are three hockey players who love playing the sport, have built deep connections with our teams, and would be forced out of the sport if England Hockey's policy comes into force in September 2025.

'Every team we play for appreciates our participation, treats us as valued team members, and actively wants us as part of our clubs.

'England Hockey have denied our clubs a say in whether we should be excluded, and have unilaterally decided to bar us from the sport we love.

'We also know that other trans women and non-binary people playing hockey may not be out to their clubs, and we are standing up for their right not to be forcibly outed and barred from playing.'

She continued: 'Each of us has been playing women's hockey for many years under the old trans-inclusive policies, but the new policy set to come into force in September 2025 will force us to play in the “open” category - currently the men’s category.'

Rachel explained how she was the 'first trans woman to play women's hockey at the university level in 2000' and has continued to play for various clubs around the city since 2017, including for Nottingham Trent University and University of Nottingham.

The other two parties involved in Rachel's claim wish to remain anonymous throughout the proceedings, according to the researcher.

'This is a sport all three of us passionately love playing, and due to personal safety concerns none of us feel safe being forced to play in an “open” category alongside men,' insisted Rachel.

'We all play the game for fun, to keep fit, and for the social benefits being part of our teams bring. We all play at a local and regional level, with none of us being elite athletes, and banning us does nothing but harm us and our teams.'

Asking for donations to her campaign, Rachel said that 'fighting a legal battle is not cheap', having revealed that the three players are working with Colman Coyle Solicitors to 'fight this policy'.

'If we win we believe this will be a landmark case, impacting equality in sports across the UK,' said the University of Nottingham researcher.

'Our solicitors are prepared to help out as much as they can but they need some cash flow so that they can stay in business and continue to assist us and others in a similar situation,' said Rachel, adding that their ultimate funding goal was '£100,000'.
The delicate lady in question:

Transgender women will be allowed to continue to compete in women's football in England provided they meet stricter eligibility criteria, the Football Association has said.
The criteria in the FA's updated trans policy includes meeting reduced testosterone levels and "match observation" to evaluate if the player "presents a risk" to the safety of other players and fair competition.
The FA says a new formal process will give the governing body "ultimate discretion" over eligibility and it will be managed on a "case-by-case basis".
Campaigners have been calling for the FA to update its transgender policy, with an estimated 100 protesters calling for change before England's men's match against the Republic of Ireland at Wembley in November.
Sports such as rugby union, rugby league and hockey restrict women's competition to players that have not gone through male puberty.
The FA says there are 20 transgender women registered to play amateur football in England among the millions who play at that level and there are none in the professional game across the Home Nations.
Transgender women will be allowed to compete in women's football provided their testosterone levels are below prescribed levels.
They must provide proof that they have been below the limit for at least 12 months, as well as a medical record of hormone therapy and an annual review of treatment.
However, a new formal process - which will involve a match observation by an FA official - will give the body the ability to remove or refuse a player's permission to play in the women's game.
The FA's policy was introduced in 2015 and the BBC has been told there have been few real challenges on the basis of safety or fairness.
In December 2023, a group of 48 MPs signed a letter urging the Football Association to change its rules on transgender inclusion to "protect women and girls" in football.
That came after several teams reportedly withdrew from games against a recreational side in Yorkshire after a shot by a transgender player injured an opponent.
Sutton United women's team postponed a fixture against Ebbsfleet United in September 2024 through "an abundance of caution". It came after Sutton signed Blair Hamilton, a transgender goalkeeper.
The club made history in January 2024 by appointing Lucy Clark, the first openly transgender manager in British football.
In March, FA chief executive Mark Bullingham said the governing body was looking to "refine" its transgender policy but its current rules were "in the right place".

Anyone else willing to bet that they'll never have the stones to actually say a tranny is dangerous after an observation even if they went full Cantona and started flying kicking people

24 years ago, I think that they required you to live as your declared gender identity for more than a year before they'd medically transition you, right?

This sounds so much like what happens in Australia where members are required to vote via two-party lines. It’s insane. Members should be able to vote by both community lines and personal discretion. But they are not allowed to. If they vote against party lines then they are dis-endorsed and relegated to run as independents at the next election. Footnote, they usually win if they’ve stood up for their electorate rather than the party line.

We want politicians with a conscience, not politicians that tow the party line.
Labor does that (very strict party discipline), but backbenchers in the LNP always have a 'conscience' vote. Any LNP in the Cabinet or shadow cabinet would have to vote in line or face repercussions, though.

It's why I don't think I could ever run for a political party, even one I mostly agreed with.
The Australian government released pro troon in women's sports propaganda. The women probably look happy and inclusive because they realize their team will win with a troon that's twice the size of their opponents.

Although the message of this commercial is morally repugnant and could only have been dreamed up by the wokest state in Australia, they do deserve some credit for an honest depiction: the trannie is massive, hulking, and obviously and unmistakably male.

What a fucking joke. Shit like this is why everyone hates troons.
Not enough people hate them. Shit like this is absolute proof.

Reactions: expectant asshole
Hypothetically, if a sport came up that they can legitimately claim no advantage in, the question shouldn't be "why not let trans women compete with real women?" it should be "why have those categories to begin with?". If it really doesn't matter at all, just mix everyone.

If there's a reason separate from physical advantage, then we're back to where we started and they should still stay out.

There's no scenario where separate categories are desired/worthwhile but men pretending to be women can still go on the women's team.

MtFs cheating their way into women's sports, and the liberals who bury their heads in the sand and pretend there's nothing at all unfair about it, makes me angrier than anything else trannies do.

Fortunately, ICONS is funding a lawsuit on behalf of women who were forced to accept Liam Thomas on the UPenn collegiate swim team. The suit alleges that UPenn violated the female plaintiff's Title IX rights and violated federal law.

OP-ed in the WSJ from the lawyer managing this case.

Former University of Pennsylvania women’s swimmers Grace Estabrook, Margot Kaczorowski and Ellen Holmquist have filed a lawsuit against the university, Harvard University, the NCAA and the Ivy League Council of Presidents over their experience sharing a team with transgender swimmer Lia Thomas. The lawsuit does not name Thomas as a defendant.

According to court documents obtained by Fox News Digital, Estabrok, Kaczorowski and Holmquist argue that Thomas’ eligibility to compete as a woman for UPenn violated their Title IX rights. It argues the NCAA’s 2010, which allows biological males to compete in the women’s category based on their preferred gender identity, is “discriminatory.”

The women claim that by allowing Thomas to compete, the institutions “injured them and violated federal law.”

The lawsuit also detailed the personal experiences each of the women faced having to share a team and locker room with Thomas. Each of the plaintiffs claims the experience left them “repeatedly emotionally traumatized.”

The plaintiffs allege that the university administrators pushed pro-trans ideology onto them throughout the process of accepting Thomas on the team and in their locker room. The former swimmers say that they were led to feel their concerns over being teammates with Thomas was rooted in a “psychological problem.”

“The UPenn administrators told the women that if anyone was struggling with accepting Thomas’s participation on the UPenn Women’s team, they should seek counseling and support from CAPS and the LBGTQ center,” the lawsuit alleges.

I wish Thomas himself could be named as a defendant. He's the one who really benefitted from all this.

Some reactions to the complaint.
1 “Sex” is used here to refer solely to binary, biological sex. See Adams by & through Kasper v.Sch. Bd. of St. Johns Cnty., 57 F.4th 791, 812 (11th Cir. 2022) (Title IX defines “sex” “based onbiology and reproductive function.”); Black’s Law Dictionary (5th ed. 1979) (“Sex. The sum of the peculiarities of structure and function that distinguish a male from a female organism[.]”); seealso Bostock v. Clayton Cnty., Ga., 590 U.S. 644, 655 (2020) (“sex” in the Civil Rights Act of1964 “refer only to biological distinctions between male and female”).2 “Women” “men” “male” “female” “he” “she” “him” and “her” are used herein in their strictbiological sense as used in Title IX’s sport-specific regulations adopted in chronological proximity to Title IX’s passage, without regard for “gender identity.”
Not bad for a non-biologist.

But as Harvard University and Ivy League officials prepared Blodgett Pool for the2022 Ivy League Championships the fact that Thomas – a lanky 6’4’’ male
I didn't realize he was that tall, now the whole thing is even more utterly ridiculous to me.

284. Throughout the 2021-2022 season, although using the women’s locker room,Thomas did not always practice with the UPenn Women’s Swimming Team because Thomas would often outpace the women during practice.285. So, while Thomas used the women’s locker room, Thomas often continued to practice with the UPenn Men’s Swimming and Diving Team.286. The Plaintiffs complained to Coach Schnur about Thomas’s participation on the women’s swim team and Thomas’s use of the women’s locker room but were repeatedly told that there was nothing that could be done about it.
So dysphoric he needs to be with the women at all times in the bathroom and changing room but not in the public pool.

298. The UPenn administrators went on to tell the women that if the women spoke publicly about their concerns about Thomas’ participation on the Women’s Team, the reputation of those complaining about Thomas being on the team would be tainted with transphobia for the rest of their lives and they would probably never be able to get a job.299. The UPenn administrators told the women that if anyone was struggling with accepting Thomas’s participation on the UPenn Women’s team, they should seek counseling and support from CAPS and the LBGTQ center.300. The administrators also invited the women to a talk titled, “Trans 101.”

301. Thus, the women were led to understand that UPenn’s position was that if a womanon the team had any problem with a trans-identifying male being on her team that woman had a psychological problem and needed counseling
If you are upset by how our creepy cult is making you change with a creepy man, then you better shut the fuck up or our creepy cult will destroy your reputation. Don't worry though, our creepy cult is happy to force our creepy cult indoctrination down your throat again, because we are fully aware you have heard all of this before as Ivy League women.

305. To avoid public and/or media attention UPenn women’s swimming team members on the trip were instructed to remove or cover with duct tape any references to “UPenn” or“University of Pennsylvania” swimming on their backpacks, sweatsuits and other gear.306. All team members except for Thomas complied with the directive to cover UPennr eferences on their clothing during this trip.
So dysphoric he needs to be with the women in solidarity at all times in the bathroom and changing room and shower but not in public.

308. During these training sessions in Florida the UPenn’s women’s team shared the water park and the women’s locker room at the water park with members of the public.309. The members of the UPenn women’s team were shocked that Thomas used the public women’s locker room at the water park and undressed in the presence of children that appeared to be as young as 4 years old.

310. Members of the UPenn women’s team do not believe that Coach Schnur, LiaThomas or anyone from UPenn advised the operators of the water park that a male was using the women’s locker room.311. Watching Thomas using a public locker room with little girls as young as four years old was traumatizing to many members of the UPenn women’s swim team and is one Margot Kaczorowski’s and Grace Estabrook’s saddest memories of their time on the UPenn women’s swim team.
No comment needed.

I didn't quote any of it but the section on biological advantages of male athletes is well written. In any sane world they win and get a huge payout too, but in any sane world all of this didn't happen in the first place. It was apparent that it was an absurdity the whole way through.

Three days ago, NCAA, Penn and Harvard have all moved to dismiss the civil lawsuit filed against them by the UPenn swimmers injured by Liam Thomas' participation in the 2021-2022 Swimming season. I've attached the UPenn motion.

Hearteningly, UPenn did get $175 million worth of federal funding paused/frozen/withheld by the Trump Administration. So it's truthful to say that allowing Liam Thomas to compete has already meaningfully cost the university a lot of money.

I will check back over the next couple of weeks to see whether the motion to dismiss is upheld or whether these alums can proceed with their case. These universities need to get hosed the way the women told to compete against Thomas got hosed.

Trans athlete Paula Griffin shines in the net at 60, even as the UK darkens for trans people

As springtime comes to England, the soccer season reaches a critical point where many teams are either being celebrated or relegated. Paula Griffin, an energetic trans woman at age 60, minds the net for Clapton Community FC, London-based Goal Diggers FC, and Peckham Town FC.

It’s a busy schedule, but it’s been a winning season in 2024/25, starting with leading Clapton’s reserves to the title in the Greater London Women’s Football League Division 2 North division.

“We scored 100 goals and only lost one match,” says Griffin, proudly. “We had eight clean sheets and only conceded a goal a game.”

On May 17, she will be in the net for Goal Diggers FC in the London Women’s Football Saturday Premier Cup. This weekend, she will play for Peckham Town FC in a LWFSL Division 1 Cup semifinal.

There is much more to Griffin’s soccer journey than just tables, fixtures and stats. Her greatest joy comes in the cohesiveness of her teams and the respect she has garnered in four years of league play at various levels.

How she is viewed by her peers in the game stands in contrast to perceptions in a country that has gained a reputation for being unfriendly to transgender people.

“I’m moving forward every day and I have people around me,” she notes. “I’ve made so many friends and allies in women’s football that it’s humbling sometimes, it really is.”

Griffin’s push to add to her trophy haul comes as trans Britons are reeling from last week’s UK Supreme Court decision stating that trans women are not legally defined as women under the nation’s 2010 Equality Act.

The effects of the ruling, and the political fallout since, is already affecting many sectors of public life, including sports,

“I was shocked, to be honest, when I first heard it,” says Griffin of the decision. “We now have two laws that possibly conflict with each other because we have a 2004 Gender Recognition Act that says I’m female and now we have a court decision that reverses that.”

Trans athletes still welcome by English football rules

One thing that has held firm so far is the English Football Association’s policy on trans participation. The FA reaffirmed its pro-inclusion regulations on April 11, which evaluate trans women seeking to play on a case-by-case basis.

The governing body has not so far signaled any retreat despite the Supreme Court ruling, and the barrage of pressure from UK media outlets that are openly anti-trans.

“In the UK, hundreds of thousands of women play football every Saturday and Sunday and you have maybe 22 transgender women who are approved to play,” says Griffin.

“Being an out trans player, you are constantly under attack by people who don’t actually care about women’s football.

“You have these right-wing, cis male commentators attacking us, but not standing up for the things that really matter in women’s football, such as the racism, misogyny, lack of finances and lack of representation, while they weaponize our existence.”

She continues: “It is rare in UK sports when representatives come from the people who play the game.

“Inclusion in the FA was decided by women who play the game, the people who actually see us on the football pitch every week and it’s made a difference. We are seeing players supporting us at the highest level.”

Paula Griffin and her transgender journey

Whether facing the pressure of stopping a goal or being an out voice in sports in uncertain times, Griffin stays calm and optimistic. Much of that demeanor comes from the journey that brought her here.

In 2017, she was staring at a diagnosis of stage 3 bladder cancer, facing an operation to save her life, and another decision that would change the course of it.

“I finally admitted to myself I was transgender and began transitioning,” she recalls.

She rallied back to health and started her transition. Being a longtime soccer fan, she decided to take a chance in 2021 and approached Goal Diggers FC.

She struggled in the early days but found her home on the pitch through a number of teams, including the nation’s first all-trans outfit, TRUK United FC. In 2022, she took the field as part of the first all-trans women’s side to take on a women’s team from the FA pyramid.

Paula Griffin has a keen eye on the future, even with a lot to play for in the weeks ahead and an unsure climate for trans people in the UK. She has no plans to stop playing, or let anyone stop her from playing.

“I think my body has reset itself after the last few years,” she said. “My mind’s in the right place and my body’s in the right place.

“The only thing that will stop me playing is when they are carrying me off the pitch in a wooden box.”

Edir: Luckily for The Hulk, he doesn't play footie in Scotland. JK Rowling can safely sign up for her local team, knowing that she won't be challenged to half-time lingerie pillow fights.

SFA bans trans women competing in women's football

The Scottish FA is updating its gender policy in order to ban transgender women competing in women's football, BBC Scotland has learned.

From next season, only those born biologically female will be allowed to take part in competitive matches in the women's game.

The current policy allows transgender women to compete in their affirmed gender category on a case-by-case basis, with testosterone levels also taken into account.

The new policy will apply to all competitive football in Scotland, including the grassroots game from under-13s and over.
However, it is understood there are currently no transgender women playing competitive football north of the border.

The revised policy was given the go-ahead at a recent board meeting but discussions aimed at updating the current guidelines had been ongoing for some time.

The final decision was taken after the recent Supreme Court ruling that a woman is defined by biological sex under equalities law.

The SFA rule change will see the governing body bring football into line with other sports like rugby, swimming and athletics.

In England, the FA rules state that transgender women can compete in the women's game if they show low enough testosterone levels and they are assessed by a match observer.

There are 20 transgender women registered to play amateur football in England among the millions who play at that level.

Zero trans women in Scottish competitive football btw
I love to make up fake scenarios to justify actual rules. Let's say an alien started competing and smashing the league, what then?
I can't think of anyone more suited to tell me what biological advantages | retain after 8 years of HRT than random Reddit users who have never researched it for longer than a five minute google search. Doesn't matter that I've spent the last decade of my life researching trans issues, including writing my undergraduate dissertation on it (I got a First btw), they are surely far more educated on the subject than me
You might perceive it as "arrogance" but what it is is "being pissed off at having to tell people I'm not a man every day of my damn fucking life". When you have people invalidating your entire existence and the last decade of your life from all sides when you know factually that they are wrong I'd like to see you react with measured calmness.
My view IS correct. There is no debate to be had. There is no "both sides". I'm not a biological man. Trans women are not men in any sense of the word. It's not a "debate" it's bigotry and explicitly against the rules of the subreddit.

In addition to the Scottish FA, the English FA are looking again at their rules as well: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/cx207yx8ve2o

The English Football Association is "carefully reviewing" the decision made just weeks ago to allow transgender women to continue playing in women's football.

The FA has been taking legal advice since the landmark UK Supreme Court ruling two weeks ago that the legal definition of a woman is based on biological sex under equalities law.

Earlier on Tuesday, the BBC learned that the Scottish Football Association was set to ban transgender women from competing in women's football.

English football's governing body updated its rules earlier this month, but they could now be amended within days, BBC Sport has been told.

I suspect they're fannying about a bit more than the Scots did given they only announced their new policy like two weeks ago. There's basically zero chance they don't end up going the same roots as the Scots in this case.

How do the stockholders of Reddit benefit from banning everyone on Earth who doesn't believe all that shit from talking about soccer on Reddit? If we do a global poll, how many people do we think sign on for those beliefs? I'd say 5% lowball and 28% on the high end.

I suspect they're fannying about a bit more than the Scots did given they only announced their new policy like two weeks ago. There's basically zero chance they don't end up going the same roots as the Scots in this case.
They held out for 2 whole days.

FA bars transgender women from women's football

Transgender women will no longer be able to play in women's football in England from 1 June, the Football Association has announced.

It amended its rules on 11 April, applying stricter eligibility criteria for transgender women to continue playing in women's football at all levels.

However, following the UK Supreme Court's ruling on 15 April that the legal definition of a woman is based on biological sex, the FA has scrapped that policy and says only those born biologically female will be permitted to play.

"This is a complex subject, and our position has always been that if there was a material change in law, science, or the operation of the policy in grassroots football then we would review it and change it if necessary," the FA said.

"We understand that this will be difficult for people who simply want to play the game they love in the gender by which they identify, and we are contacting the registered transgender women currently playing to explain the changes and how they can continue to stay involved in the game."

Sources have told BBC Sport that the Scottish FA is set to follow the English FA's ruling by banning transgender women from women's football in Scotland.

What was the FA's previous policy?

Under amended rules announced on 11 April, the FA said transgender women could continue to participate in women's football provided they met certain criteria.

They would have to prove via medical records that their testosterone levels had been below prescribed levels for at least the past 12 months, and provide a record of hormone therapy and an annual review of treatment.

A new formal process, which would involve a "match observation" by an FA official, would give the FA "ultimate discretion" on a case-by-case basis.

What has the reaction been?

Fiona McAnena, director of campaigns for human rights charity Sex Matters, said the ruling was "overdue" and that the previous policy was "nonsensical".

Edit - It's been a busy day for outing troons. In the old fashioned sense of telling them to fuck off. Sports are lining up to tell them to pack up their collection of stolen underwear and take a hike. Next up are Cricket and Netball.

Football and cricket ban transgender players from women’s sport in England

FA confirms change of policy after Supreme Court ruling, with England Netball following suit and ECB poised to join move
01 May 2025 12:48pm BST

Transgender women are to be banned from playing women’s football, cricket and netball in England following the Supreme Court ruling on single-sex spaces.

In a move welcomed by the Prime Minister, the Football Association (FA) confirmed it was stopping those born male from playing in the women’s game.

England Netball did the same, while Telegraph Sport has been told the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) will formally follow suit on Friday.

The news emerged barely a fortnight after the verdict of the UK’s highest court and three weeks after the FA quietly brought in new trans rules that stopped short of a blanket ban.

Both the FA and ECB had been taking legal advice over a decision which this week led to trans women being prevented from playing competitive football in Scotland.

A Downing Street spokesman said: “Obviously it’s one for the FA but we have been clear that biology matters when it comes to women’s sport, that everyone should be compliant with the law.

“And we will continue to ensure women and girls across the country can enjoy sports and we will continue to support bodies to protect the integrity, fairness and safety of the game.”

Asked whether Sir Keir Starmer wanted to see a specific category for transgender football players, the spokesman said: “The fundamental principle is it’s up to each sport to set their own policies but they should obviously do so in line with the law and the Supreme Court judgment obviously brought welcome clarity to this issue.”

‘There must be consequences for senior FA officers’

Former FA chairman Lord Triesman told Telegraph Sport: “The FA has finally seen sense. It would have been the utmost foolishness to disregard the Supreme Court. I welcome the change of heart.”

Citing bans handed to two teenage players who asked if trans opponents were men, Lord Triesman added: “Today, the FA should take several more decisions which demonstrate they understand the position they have placed our national sport in.

“First, they should write and apologise to all those, perhaps especially the neurodivergent young women, who raised proper questions and were subjected to hearings, expunging the findings and cleaning the records. And there must surely be consequences for the most senior FA officers. No one can have such a shallow regard for the integrity of the sport. This is truly a matter for resignation and apology.

“I will raise this on every appropriate occasion in Parliament, not out of any malice, but because there have to be the right foundation stones for any sport; and football doesn’t have them.”
Fiona McAnena, director of campaigns at human rights charity Sex Matters, said: “This is welcome but long overdue. The FA has had ample evidence of the harms to women and girls caused by its nonsensical policy of letting men who identify as women play in women’s teams. The requirement to lower their testosterone tells you that everyone knew they were not women. Thankfully, the UK Supreme Court has now confirmed this, saying it is lawful to exclude ‘all men, including trans women, regardless of their GRC [Gender Recognition Certificate] status’.

“Every other sporting body now needs to re-establish a genuine women’s category, and this shameful period in history will finally be brought to an end.”

The FA said in a statement: “As the governing body of the national sport, our role is to make football accessible to as many people as possible, operating within the law and international football policy defined by Uefa and Fifa.

“Our current policy, which allows transgender women to participate in the women’s game, was based on this principle and supported by expert legal advice. This is a complex subject, and our position has always been that if there was a material change in law, science or the operation of the policy in grass-roots football, then we would review it and change it if necessary.

“The Supreme Court’s ruling on the 16th April means that we will be changing our policy. Transgender women will no longer be able to play in women’s football in England, and this policy will be implemented from 1st June 2025.

“We understand that this will be difficult for people who simply want to play the game they love in the gender by which they identify, and we are contacting the registered transgender women currently playing to explain the changes and how they can continue to stay involved in the game.”

Meanwhile, England Netball said in an update on its own website: “The female category will be exclusively for players born female, irrespective of their gender identity, whilst mixed netball will serve as the sport’s inclusive category, allowing players to compete under the gender with which they identify.”

The Supreme Court ruling that trans women were not women had previously been hailed by campaigners as a watershed moment for sport.

Before the clarification, the FA quietly implemented a case-by-case policy at the start of April which stopped short of a blanket ban. The ECB had already stopped trans women who had gone through male puberty from playing in elite matches but not in grass-roots cricket.

The World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association confirmed on Monday that its own policy would be reviewed after clarifications on the meaning of the Equality Act.

The Ultimate Pool Group had already changed its trans inclusion policy last week following receipt of a report which concluded it was a gender-affected sport.

Other sports, such as rugby, athletics, swimming and cycling, had long since banned trans women from their female categories.

The 88-page Supreme Court ruling included a section devoted to the interpretation of Section 195 of the Equality Act, which provides an exemption allowing competitors to be excluded from a “gender-affected” sport or activity based on their sex.

The ruling stated: “We consider that this provision (Section 195) is, again, plainly predicated on biological sex, and may be unworkable if a certificated sex interpretation is required.”

Lord Triesman, former Olympic swimmer Sharron Davies and the campaign group Sex Matters confirmed that the ruling had opened the door to football and cricket authorities facing eventual lawsuits from women athletes.

They could now face legal action from trans women, with the English Blackball Pool Federation having already been taken to court for banning them from its female competitions.

A verdict in that lawsuit is pending.
