I always felt Bob was trapped by Barbara. He was an older guy, probably scared of growing old alone and not having anyone to take care of him. In Bob's defense: No he wasn't by any means father of the year. He was about 53/54 when Chris was born. By then he had two adult children and probably just wanted to enjoy the rest of his life with (shudder) Bard. She was about 40 at the time so still fertile; she may have lied about going into menopause or lied about contraception. Bob, by then, was out of touch with contemporary methods of raising a child, not mention an autistic one. Kids having tantrums is pretty stressful BUT autistic tantrums/meltdowns are hellish- it's easier (not better) to give in to shut them the fuck up. Bob's letter and plaque speaks volumes of what he wanted for Chris. But Chris is his own person sadly.

From what I've read on then CWCiki and seen on youtube, Bob tried to knock some sense into Chris, but was undermined by Barb and /or just didn't have the energy to deal with them. I imagine their home life to be be some dystopian nightmare version of King of the Hill. In the vidyah of them on that ill fated date, Bob was getting more out of it than Chris was. Despite his views, I'm sure he would have been super interesting to talk to.

Given that his two other kids actually made something of themselves also suggests that Bob wasn't a complete fuck up- just the unholy combined of him and Barb

I really don't know what I find more depressing. The fact that you're probably right about Bob's decision, or the fact that this kind of mentality really doesn't seem that uncommon, and wondering how many people are living lives of quiet desperation?
