An estimated 1 in 3 teens and preteens, ages 12 to 17, have prediabetes, according to new data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The CDC data means an estimated 8.4 million young people -- or 32.7% of the U.S. adolescent population -- had prediabetes in 2023, the most recent data available.

With prediabetes, blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough for a Type 2 diabetes diagnosis.

Prediabetes, which the CDC calls a "critical warning sign," increases a person's risk of developing Type 2 diabetes as well as other conditions like heart disease and stroke.

Separate from the new data among teens, new diabetes diagnoses among adultshave also stopped decreasing after more than a decade of decline -- with about 1.5 million diagnoses in 2023, the most recent data.

In a statement, Dr. Christopher Holliday, the CDC’s top official in charge of diabetes prevention, said Type 2 diabetes poses a "significant threat" to young people's health.

“Simple life changes – like healthy eating and staying active – can make a big difference in preventing or delaying type 2 diabetes,” said Holliday, who called the new data "a wake-up call."

Risk factors for prediabetes include being overweight, having a parent or sibling with Type 2 diabetes, as well as being physically active less than three times a week, according to the CDC.

The disease can be prevented by losing weight if overweight and being more physically active, the agency added.
 
People need to stop sperging about high-fructose corn syrup. Type 2 diabeetus comes from too much glucose regardless of if it's coming from HFCS or sucrose. They're both literally made of the same things, glucose and fructose. HFCS has more fructose and less glucose than sucrose does and A1C tests measure your blood-glucose levels. I'm not saying it's healthy, but anyone who thinks cane sugar is some down-to-earth wholesome ingredient is a moron.

I shouldn't need to tell someone of your educational background just how many calories are in beer and fried foods like fish and chips. Pub culture is absolutely not healthy. There's a reason Mr. Norf F.C. has what is typically called a "beer gut".

Not really, no. I've had issues but I've kept my weight reasonable and reduced my sugar and went from prediabetic to healthy.

It’s your bodies warning sign that your going to get diabetes and have one last chance to correct course. I learned about it when I had a sinking intuition about my toes starting to tingle for no reason.

I’ve felt it almost totally go away, already, just from eating out less and complete alcohol abstention. Probably more the latter.
 
Too much sneed oils, too much corn syrup, and far too much sugar. Pretty much any fucking packaged bread you can buy has one, if not two, if not all of the above. And god knows we as red-blooded, god-blessed Americans LOVE our hamburgers, but those jewish fucks poisoned the buns.
But this article is about obese kids. In this scenario, it's purely a parenting issue. I would imagine that as a parent, you'd look VERY carefully at the ingredients of the stuff your kid eats on a daily basis and is part of their diet, but many fail at this one simple task.

Yes. Prediabetic is defined by blood test results, specifically blood glucose. They typically use A1c readings.

Meanwhile, morbid obesity is about body composition and typically a weight vs height equation using either BMI or more specific tape measuring.

You can be well under the morbid level and still have weight-related glucose impairment. You can also be morbidly obese and still have normal A1c readings.

We had fish and chips as kids and young adults and were low weight. Men (mainly, women didn’t really go into pubs much) drank beer, and had physical jobs and vanishingly few were overweight. But we didn’t have fish and chips every night. It was a treat. The kind of Norf FC behemoth you see now was a really rare sight back then.

I think some of this is that.

I really do think some of this is things are deeply wrong with our food supply. If it's not HFCS, it's sugar, if it's not sugar it's weird preservatives and stuff that is banned in the rest of the world.

I can't tell you how many people I know leave the country for work or a vacation, and come back swearing they ate way more food than normal has anything they wanted relative to home and lost weight.

Some of that is walking I'm sure but some of that is a hella red flag. I've known folks who moved overseas so they aren't doing the tourist thing and half their food allergies vanish and they also loose weight.

The ingredients lists for equivalent Uk/US products are really different. The first time I went to the USA, well over 30 years ago, I was agog at the supermarkets. Aisles and aisles of things we didn’t have. Breakfast cereals in rainbow colours (we had Weetabix and porridge.)
You can of course get good food in the states, I had a couple of steaks I’ve never had beaten anywhere but they were enough to feed a family.

Yeah, and it just seems wrong to try and single out Americans as being fat when the exact same reasons why of too many calories and not enough exercise are a first-world problem.

It's also the stuff that used to be treats made into a regular daily occurrence. When I was younger (back in the 80s) soda was still an occasional treat, something you had once in a while. Same with take out food like pizza, it wasn't often. Now you see too many people treating that stuff as a meal mainstay, with home cooked meals as something occasional.
