I would think the punishment is the restriction of freedom and connection to society - which given all Chris did most of the time was sit in his room and have zero meaningful social contact outside of the internet, means the biggest part of having freedom stripped away doesn't actually have an effect on him.
Devil's Advocate: Justice is blind. The courts have a very reasonable understanding of the penal system in their purview and can administer punishment balanced with the harshness of their system. If Chris had done this in New York, they wouldn't toss him in Riker's, he'd probably go to MDC Brooklyn or Queensburo.
While I agree with you in theory, I have no answers as to exactly how citizens can know what prison life is like w/o actually experiencing it. TV portrayals aren't trustworthy, though documentaries may come close. Even visitation at prisons is fake because everyone has to behave.

He would twist around events or motives, fabricate things out of fat air, or concoct some sort "Yeah it was bad, but it was really good in the end because I learned". This is a really interesting question. Chris hasn't been around his god awful wardrobe in months, he hasn't been exposed to any pornography or commercial advertisements, so all he sees is prison guards in their uniforms, and everybody else in black and white stripes. No makeup, no jewelry, nothing he dress up as or play pretend. He probably still thinks of himself as female and uses those pronouns. Unless he gets a real shock, once he gets back into the immersion of corporate media, he'll go right back to the clown outfits.
