He most likely was inspired to start the series by the Sonic Archie Comics.
Compare the formatting of the front cover company (or lack of a company, in Chris's case) logos:

I wouldn't be surprised if he had a subscription to it or simply got them at the store from time to time.
 
you could look at a lot of the early sonic comics in one of the sonic compilation games that the gamecube had

"Improves." Even when Chris traces it still looks like nasty dog shit scraped off of a shoe. A kindergarten kid with Downs Syndrome could do better.

Looks like it's just the covers unless they scanned in all the stories. Chris could've also bought the TPB versions later on (or downloaded "cbr" files).

The most hilarious part is when he thanked "Miss Kagney Lynn Moore from Seattle, Washington" for buying the PS4 for him. :lol::lol:
 
At some point I remember seeing a statement from Chris (can't remember if chat log or email, sorry, old) where he mentioned that he expect Sonichu to be published by Archie or Dark Horse.

Probably just good old browsing. Remember Chris buys DLC for games he only played once, games he doesn't like, and even for games he never owned. He probably just sat on PSN all day. Especially since he apparently never turns off his consoles.
