At least 18 are dead after a series of explosions and shootings. There have been at least 4 separate, but coordinated incidents.

I too am in favor of an all-pork diet. ISIS militants are so fundamentalist they probably believe having even a bite of bacon will kept them from going to heaven and getting their 72 virgins. Like with the idea of sending female soldiers and pilots to kick ISIS's ass, this is really hitting them where it hurts.

It was actually the Scottish Justice minister Kenny Macaskill that authorised his release however contrary to the popular narrative it wasn't really his fault.

I have to be very careful how i word this to avoid self doxing so you'll forgive me if i don't supply evidence for this but a bit of digging and you can confirm this yourselves. I think its interesting enough to merit sharing.

During the initial trial the American authorities were warned by the Crown office and the procurator service (Scotlands prosecution) not to provide key witnesses any form of financial incentive or resettlement scheme as this would seriously weaken the case under the scots laws of evidence.

Shortly before his release it was brought to the attention of the commison that not only had several key witnesses received $1million+ from the Americans and assistance resettling abroad but this had been done in secret without disclosure to either side in the trial. It was on this basis they recommended a second appeal.

It was widely known amongst those involved that thanks to the US ignoring the domestic advice and meddling in such a clumsy way they had inadvertently thrown the case. There was no doubt at all that the case which had been weak to begin with was now unwinnable and megrahi would be acquitted at appeal.

It was considered better politically that megrahi was released on 'compassionate grounds' than be found innocent and the actions of the US cost Scotland in the inevitable lawsuit that would follow.

The fact that the US authorities then condemned the decision to release megrahi after torpedoing his trial through arrogant incompetence riled the crown office to the point there is lasting ill will to this day and destroyed the already ragged reputation of US intelligence in the wider scots criminal law community. It is not a coincidence that there is a subfaction within the otherwise liberal SNP that favours Russia over the states.
