11 Ways Boomers Were Way More Forward Thinking Than Anyone Gives Them Credit For

As people get older, they tend to move further away from the traits that defined their younger years. They put more stock in tradition than they used to, and they often double down on their habits and perspectives.

They might be set in their ways now, but boomers were way more forward thinking than anyone gives them credit for. They were outspoken and politically active. They challenged the status quo and they cared about social change. Boomers paved the way for all the generations that followed.

Here are 11 ways boomers were way more forward thinking than anyone gives them credit for

1. They fought on the front lines of the civil rights movement

While we tend to think of them as conservative now, boomers were way more forward thinking than anyone gives them credit for when they were younger, especially when it came to social change. As young adults, they advocated for equal rights and took their future into their own hands.

Black Americans, especially, mobilized and organized to fight for civil rights. They held the government accountable for injustices, leading various grassroots initiatives that put pressure on political leadership to actually enforce laws that had been passed for racial justice.

Several civil rights leaders who were the age of boomers' parents, like Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, Jr, are famous for their historical impact, yet it’s incredibly important to acknowledge the many younger, unnamed Americans who were just as committed to the civil rights movement.

2. They questioned the government

In their younger years, boomers’ lives were defined by significant social and political upheaval. They came of age during the Vietnam War and Watergate, both of which eroded their trust in the government.

In 1964, the National Election Study reported that 64% of Americans believed that the government was “run for the benefit of all the people.” By 1965, U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War escalated. Military deployment increased steadily until 1973, and by the end of the 70s, only 25% of Americans believed the government was run for everyone’s benefit.

In that era, boomers were outspoken and politically involved. They didn’t keep quiet about their disillusionment. They questioned the government outright and refused to accept the party line, which shaped their outlook on the world for years to come.

3. They championed equal rights for women

When it comes to gender roles, boomers were way more forward thinking than anyone gives them credit for. Their participation in the feminist movement had a serious impact on the political sphere.

During the period known now as second wave of feminism, boomer women worked to establish several aspects of society that get taken for granted today, including ending gender-based discrimination through policies like parental leave, equal pay for equal work, Roe v Wade, and Title IX.

Boomer women fought hard for the right to work outside of the home, then broke the glass ceiling and took on leadership roles in jobs that were historically male. Even though gender inequity is still alive and well, boomers made waves and established necessary changes.

4. They were student activists

As student activists, boomers were way more forward thinking than anyone gives them credit for. Their college experience extended beyond the classroom, as several protest movements gained traction on campuses across the U.S. Students organized sit-ins, strikes, and speeches, calling attention to their political goals.

One of the most significant student activist groups of the era was SNCC, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, which was founded and mentored by organizer Ella Baker. The start of SNCC represented the “first time [that] young people decisively entered the ranks of civil rights movement leadership.”

As Baker explained, young activists were “seeking to rid America of the scourge of racial segregation and discrimination — not only at lunch counters, but in every aspect of life.”

5. They raised awareness around environmentalism

Boomers were at the forefront of the modern environmentalist movement. They were way more forward thinking than anyone gives them credit for, as they demanded that the government take action to protect the environment.

An article in the journal “One Earth”revealed that boomers’ approach to environmentalism was revolutionary for their time. As widely recognized as it is now, Earth Day started as a grassroots political movement led by boomers. The first Earth Day was held in 1970 as an environmental teach-in across 2,000 college campuses and 10,000 high schools. It was initiated by Senator Gaylord Nelson to raise awareness for environmental health concerns, including the damage caused by toxins in pesticides and other chemicals.

Environmentalism is currently a politically divisive issue, but when boomers were young, environmental protection unified the political parties. More environmental laws were passed in the late 60s and early 70s than any other time because of bipartisan efforts.

6. They built the tech industry

As much as boomers embrace iPads and posting on Facebook now, they also had a big impact on the tech industry. Without boomers, there would be no internet as we know it today. Early inventions from several influential boomers paved the way for the technology that changed our lives.

In 1977, boomers Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs created the Apple II personal computer, a close cousin to today’s computers. In 1989, Sir Tim Berner-Lee outlined a concept that led to the existence of the World Wide Web. He created a software language for web page development and invented the first web browser.

7. They were (and are) health-conscious

When boomers were young, they helped bring holistic lifestyles into the mainstream. They popularized the macrobiotic food movement, yoga, and transcendental meditation across the U.S.

As they age, their focus on health and well-being hasn’t slowed down. According to Jody Holtzman, the Senior Vice President of Thought Leadership for the AARP, “today’s generation of baby boomers… are concerned with self-care and healthiness more than previous generations.”

In 2020, boomers held $2.6 trillion in buying power, and they put a significant amount of money into the self-care industry. They focused on products for healthy aging, including eye care, skin care, and heart health. Boomers spend more of their grocery budget on health and wellness products than any other generation. They remain deeply committed to their own well-being, and they’re living longer as a result.

8. They lived together before marriage

Boomers pushed against social convention by living together before marriage. According to Pew Research Center, boomers approached marriage very differently than their parents did. Their parents married young in high numbers, but boomers didn’t marry at the same rate.

In 1970, almost 90% of 30-year-olds were married, yet that number has decreased significantly as time has passed. Americans are less likely to have married by age 30 now than in the past, a social trend that was influenced by boomers.

9. They reduced stigma around divorce

The legal possibility of a no-fault divorce didn't exist until it was passed into state law in California in 1969, right as boomers were first beginning to get married. When they were young, then, divorce was easier to come by but still seriously stigmatized.

As they've gotten older, boomers have done their part to reduce that stigma. According to a study from the “Journal of Gerontology,” the divorce rate among people ages 65 and older tripled from 1990 to 2021. Boomers set the trend for late-in-life divorces, also known as “gray divorces.”

As researcher Susan Brown explained, “I’m increasingly confident this gray divorce revolution is being driven by baby boomers and is likely to be a phenomenon largely unique to them.”

By divorcing in their older years, boomers prove that it’s never too late to prioritize independence and inner peace.

10. They embraced non-traditional family life

Boomers have done more than get divorced in their older age — they also entered the dating pool and even remarried. As a result, boomers are redefining what family means. They’re not only parents and grandparents, they’re step-parents and step-grandparents, too.

By embracing non-traditional family structures, boomers have shown that it really is love that makes a family.

11. They proved that life doesn’t end at retirement

Boomers are living their best lives, proving that life doesn’t end at retirement. They’re exiting the workplace and embracing all the adventures still to come. They refuse to waste any time and they’re recommitting to themselves.

They might be in their silver years now, but they’re still living the gold standard.

Just find solace in the fact that most boomers will be taken "care" of by fat shaniquas and ghetto tyrones when their millenial children dump them in the nursing home to rot.
I also find immense personal ammusement when boomers have to go to hospital and are forced to see first hand what waves of migrants does to the health system in countries. SUFFAH, BOOMER. SUFFAH.

It just sucks that millenials, zoomers and everyone younger will have to go through their entire life dealing with this shit.

Another bit of solace, but I do think that this will all collapse one day due to lack of competence, so there's that. Might want to check up on the Self-Sufficiency board often though...

This one is funny. The reason we have endless dick pill commercials is because the Boomers are so fat an unhealthy they can't get their dicks up any more. Because they're lazy fucks who want pills to treat symptoms because fixing the problem would require work, man, and we ain't got time for that, the third wife isn't going to fuck herself, and it's not like she's hot any more either.

Meanwhile, we had a president who had a son when he was in his 70s and then his son had a son when he was in his 70s.

I feel like boomer hate perfectly maps onto that one meme of the IQ bell curve.

You have the retarded people who hate boomers because they have money, then the midwit people who cope and write articles like this, then you have the people who understand HOW the Boomers got that money and hate them for that reason.

When I was much younger I thought the boomer hate was a bit overblown. At that time the "bedroom feminist" era was in full swing so the most prominently annoying people I was exposed to online and in a day to day context were overly political Millenials.

It took me getting older and more familiar with American history beyond the tiny sliver I had personally experienced to really understand how much the Boomers fucked up. Every insipid idea put forth by what we would nowadays call "woke" people is just a logical extension of the groundwork laid by the boomer generation.

It's almost fascinating how thoroughly and utterly despised boomers have managed to be as a generation. I've met people who are Gen Xers, Millenials, and Gen Z who all hate boomers for similar reasons. I know every generation hates their parents, but if the proceeding THREE generations all agree that your generational cohort sucked and ruined everything, maybe take a look in the mirror and consider how you might have royally fucked up.

I am curious to see how future generations will think of the boomers, judging by the reactions to them melting down about the stock market fiasco, something tells me that it is their divine recompense to have history blacken their names.

I honestly wonder how future generations will handle the subject of Isreal and whether the rest of the world should keep fellating it day in and day out.

Future generations absolutely will not care so it comes down to whether AIPAC can hold on to influence otherwise it'll slowly lose American support and might even get antagonistic if they threaten to start anything major "in self defense" from their surrounding states.

I have a boomer relative who just went into the hospital for the 3rd time in 2 years for complications of CHF.... because he routinely discontinues his "don't die" cocktail of meds his doctor prescribed him because he "feels fine" today, and what's that doctor really know that he doesn't? He went to college, he's smart! He didn't get a degree in medicine, but, so what? What is medicine but applied accounting, right? Some boomers literally think they're too rich and too smart to die until they're 120..... Boomers think even the most moderate of health conscious decisions, even one to have a little less steak and ice cream? Is a concern for poor dumb people, not them. They don't even consider health issues until they hear or see the Reaper's footprints, and even then? They'll convince themselves he's here for someone else.....

I honestly wonder what their inevitable punishments in Hell will be? Any guesses guys? You can get as graphic as you want.
Forced to watch their great grand children living a good life that they cannot suck on like a vampire to a teat.

Or just watching an endless pile of money on fire forever.

Boomers are the only group I know of that require a "Not All Boomers Are Like That" disclaimer be posted in every video that's about them, else they'll flood the comments section saying ""Not all Boomers were like that! I was one of the GOOD Ones!" No other group will react that way to a video criticizing them. Black people, feminists... - they don't give a shit if some rando shit talks them. But Boomers can't stand the thought of anyone bringing their entire cohort to task, even if it's obvious that they're only discussing the worse examples of their generation.

Here are 11 ways boomers were way more forward thinking than anyone gives them credit for embraced degeneracy the moment it became viable to do so.

1. They fought on the front lines of the civil rights movement

No. Jewish activists, communists, and the well-dressed church-going blacks they roped in fought on the front lines of the Civil Rights movement. Boomers sat back in their safe white neighborhoods and plotted ways to undermine the white working class by (A.) importing negroes into their neighborhoods and by (B.) bussing their children into "diverse" schools, thus forcing white people to flee to places where their children wouldn't receive substandard schooling and daily stompings from Laqueesha and Tyrone.

2. They questioned the government

No. What they questioned were the values the government was promoting at the time, which revolved around home, hearth, family and America First patriotism. Once the Boomers had taken over the government and had started using it for Leftist Propaganda, importing scab labor/cheap Chinese crap, exporting jobs, vote-buying, Israel-worship and gibs distribution, they were all too happy to support the Government.

3. They championed equal rights for women

No. What they wanted was for women's labor to be added to the economy and taxed, and for women to become promiscuous, hate men, knee-jerk embrace destructive but feel-good policies, and support a welfare state. They didn't tell women that this would result in the price of everything (especially housing) shooting through the roof and the buying power of the average worker getting drastically cut because the value of their labor would be reduced by the additional workforce. They also didn't tell women that this would eventually result in a gender war where trannies would invade their spaces with the full authority of the Law backing them.

4. They were student activists

They became an army of proto-wokescolds who, conveniently, could opt out of compulsive combat duty in Vietnam. They were also behind the push to make college mandatory for achieving a middle class life, even if 90 percent of everything the average non-STEM worker does are things they could be trained to do on the job without any sort of formal degree.

5. They raised awareness around environmentalism

They cried and tied themselves to trees, then set up the electric car/solar panel/global warming grifts once they realized there was big money to be made by them. This, despite the fact that most attempts to monetize "environmental friendliness" have resulted in even more pollution and waste.

6. They built the tech industry

They also invented the Dot-Com-Bubble and the Tech Crash, and were responsible for giving thousands of American jobs to pajeets. The blame for the modern day, poop-smeared Sodom known as San Francisco can also be laid at the Boomer's feet.

7. They were (and are) health-conscious

They fear Death because they know what awaits them on the Other Side is either Nothing or it isn't pretty. Their attempts to make food healthy only resulted in a bunch of food that is still unhealthy because it's been drowned in sugar, salt, and HFCS in order to be palatable. Their obsession with getting rid of animal fats also made most fast food taste like gross cardboard.

8. They lived together before marriage

They thought test-driving each other would result in healthier relationships. What it did instead was cheapen the sexual bond between men and women, resulting in more fragile and easily broken relationships.

9. They reduced stigma around divorce

They chose their own happiness above the health and well being of their children, they kicked off the nightmare known as "blended families", and they made marriage such a high risk for people with assets that fewer are willing to pursue it, even with pre-nups. They even gave it to the fags, which shows just how worthless the institution had become.

10. They embraced non-traditional family life

They insisted on having degenerate sex lives, even after all of the harm it had already caused them. Their high STD rates and broken, mentally ill, trooned out children/grandchildren are proof that they've learned nothing from their mistakes.

11. They proved that life doesn’t end at retirement

That's because they refuse to retire from their high-paying jobs, and once they do, (and have made sure that said job has been outsourced to India for 3 cents an hour,) they set out to spend all of the money they would have given their progeny on cruises, sex tourism, and junk they buy on QVC. Fuck Boomers. Even the "good ones".

They reduced stigma around divorce

The legal possibility of a no-fault divorce didn't exist until it was passed into state law in California in 1969, right as boomers were first beginning to get married. When they were young, then, divorce was easier to come by but still seriously stigmatized.
Oh yeah, the death of the nuclear family as a result of married couples no longer having to work things out and the resulting fallout in the form of rising single parent households where young boys grow up with no father figure to guide them in life has worked out SO FUCKING WELL!

5. They raised awareness around environmentalism
And because of that fucking bullshit, all the jobs were shipped off to China who don't have the same concerns about "muh pollution".

I like how this is written as some sort of wholesome chungus thing, when in reality left wing boomers -particularly, Jewish boomers- inflicted a decade and a half of terror from the late 60s into the 80s. They even bombed the US government in the name of gay race communism.

Boomers are the only ones actively still watching cable TV, so I'm not surprised they still believe whatever the idiot box tells them.
Fuck me, we will get the same generation of idiots addicted to their magic box with zoomies, aren't we? Except instead of CNN or Fox it will be social media and youtube channels
Already happens for quite sometime now. The difference is it's a millennial who doesn't have a job, smokes weed all day + drinking boxed wine, watching SNL, John Oliver and other shit shows as they chortle to themselves thinking they're smarter than everyone else. Sometimes after, they fall asleep from being too high. These people are what you call, "The resistance."

The main reason Gen X is fucked up in their way is the side effect of their Silent Gen/Early Boomer parents getting divorces, working all the time, etc. Leaving them to fend for themselves and their siblings. Latch key kids and all that. My oldest, Gen X, sibling has stories of things my Boomer parents pull when they were growing up and it was just narcissistic and irresponsible, and our parents stayed together. I've noticed that other than music, Boomers don't like to talk about the 70s as much as they like the 60s and 80s, and I'm pretty sure it's because they got up to some shit in the 70s and like to forget about that.

Just look at the clothes and interior decorating, absolutely terrible.
