I only recently started getting into more of the older stuff and it’s been a real treat, watched Akira for the first time and the quality and style of it was very visually appealing. It’s something about how animation was difficult back then so it only attracted the truly passionate and good artists, resulting in so many good visuals.

Right before corona I saw a brand new 8k negative transfer of Akira in a state of the art Dolby Atmos theatre. Boy, did it rock my socks off. Made me appreciate the nerds putting in the effort to preserve such things.

By the way, the video in the OP is from the same universe as Akira in case you didn't know. Good movie, Neo Tokyo.

No Megazone 23?

What killed a ton of these genres was around the late 2000's and early 2010's many anime companies started churning out moeblobs because people kept buying the fucking merch in funko pop amounts.

Check out Renovation's Sega games. Specifically Earnest Evans and El Viento.

I really love the look of older anime compared to modern ones. Hand drawn animations looks more unique and authentic compared to digital even if the quality may not have been as great back then.

Not a shill but retro crush streaming is pretty good for old school anime.

Also having feels on everything in this thread.

Edit: I think one of my favorite bits of old anime is the infringing on Western IP and no one giving a shit because western entertainment lawyers didn't speak japanese to notice or have the resources to get involved.

Been watching 80s cartoons lately (because I'm bored when I don't work), and I noticed more than a few of them, like Transformers and Real Ghostbusters, definitely have this aesthetic going on in several episodes (albeit with lower quality thanks to rushed American schedules trying to pump out 65 episodes). Anyone else ever notice this?

They used Japanese studios for quite a few episodes as did GiJoe and Thundercats.

Oh, I'm aware of that. I'm just more taken aback at how 80s anime they could get at times.
This happened well into the mid 90's, I think even a few series like SWAT Katz had their styled drastically changed because an anime studio was willing to animate them. Batman:TAS had a ton of episodes animated by Japanese studios.

Bubblegum Crisis is also another one worth checking out, that and it's sequel 2040.

What I think is interesting is that while the lyrics of the original Japanese intro are from the prespective of Lum
Don't get so fidgety!

You're always looking all over the place!

Stop looking away from me!

More than anyone else, I

love you, love you, love you the best!

love you, love you, love you!

love you, love you, love you!

love you, love you, love you!

On nights when the stars are twinkling,

I dream all about you.

I love you, but you act like you don't know.

I bet you're crazy for someone else by now!

Ah! Men all have

so many loves.

Ah! You're spreading them all over,

and making me worry!

Don't get so fidgety!

You're always looking all over the place!

Stop looking away from me!

More than anyone else, I

love you the best!

Ah! How many lovers

does a man want?

Ah! Love only me,

and me alone, always.

Don't get so fidgety!

You're always looking all over the place!

Stop looking away from me!

More than anyone else, I

love you the best!

Always the best!

Everything about you, I

love, love, love,

love, love, love,

I love you the best!

The Italian dub of the intro has completely different lyrics from Ataru:
This one will be a strange love (oh aoaoh)
it burns in, out, here, there (oh aoaoh)
only one gaze and the flame is already turned on
Do I run away, stay, break free, come back, who knows?

How difficult is to get by (in this world)
How difficult is to get by (in this world)
How difficult is to get by (in this world)
if we can never make a mistake

I'd like to run away (from the world)
in the end I stay
I will not leave...
I already know that later on
you always win...

In my fate there's not peace (oh aoaoh)
no one in the world is as crazy as you (oh aoaoh)
You look at me smiling and I shiver because I know
Do I run away, stay, break free, come back, who knows?

How difficult is to get by (in this world)
How difficult is to get by (in this world)
How difficult is to get by (in this world)
if we can never make a mistake

I'd like to run away (from the world)
in the end I stay
I will not leave...
I already know that later on
you always win...

How difficult is to get by (in this world)
How difficult is to get by (in this world)
How difficult is to get by (in this world)

I'd like to run away (from the world)
in the end I stay
I will not leave...
I already know that later on
you always win.

I think the eighties vibes carried on until like, '98. Or maybe that's because Initial D is the first time I noticed a style change. Sure it happened before then but I'm not enough of a weeb to point it out.
