To me, 2 shows the lifecycle of an Internet celebrity and how they will become victims of their own fandom’s evolution. He was there early on, about when it started, and later began to see his popularity fade as time goes on due to how the fandom changes. What was once some artists and fans of that art transformed into something more than that, a fetishy wannabe hugbox where the members couldn’t agree on what was off limits, so it ended up being a huge infestation of petty drama. New people came in and the general populace changed from some nerds at a sci-fi con to this diluted group of egotistical fuckwits taking themselves way too seriously. The people he appealed to either aren’t there anymore or at least aren’t nearly as prominent as they used to be. He didn’t appeal to the majority of the fandom anymore, and he handled this part in any fandom celebrity’s “career” (for lack of a better term) in the worst possible way: a meltdown. If anything, his tale is one of what not to do when you get some internet community fame and see it wane more with each day.

It's not that the demographics of the fandom changed, it's just that 2's schtick got tired. The pond got a lot larger and there were a lot more people providing his sort of content and doing it better. I mean, you're right in the bit that he hasn't handled the arc of internet (near-)celebrity very well, but it's not the target audience changing that left him high and dry, it's that he was never good and the target audience finally realized that.

There was always a group of people who didn't like 2's comedy. As the fandom grew, that group of people grew larger. People actually started seeing his comedy for the garbage that it was, especially as newer talent came in with better material.

Everytime he screeches something stupid on the internet, he further alienates the people that were once his fans, and in the process loses some more.

Oh, there have always been plenty of people taking themselves too seriously. Naylor in particular embodies that more than anyone. I only know maybe half of the people you mentioned there, however. I guess what I'm saying is that fandoms change and the old guard aren't gonna be as popular or well-respected as they used to be. It's just the passage of time. The why of it can be debated, and I haven't researched it enough to really argue one way or the other in this case. How one handles this is their own doing, and 2 embodies what not to do when this happens.
