2 The Ranting Gryphon / 2gryphon / Matthew Wayne Davis - Furry Fandom "Comedian" Whose Spotlight is Fading, leader of the "Anthro" fandom

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
That's assuming 2 can even keep his shit together. He said he was starting this new Anthro Fandom and I've yet to hear a damn thing since his mentioning of it. He wants to start a bar and yet I highly doubt he even has the funds or credit to get a business loan going in the middle of a pandemic.

It's obvious by this point that, since not being given stage time at Anthrocon (despite not really being considered persona non grata, since he's not been banned), 2's pretty much devolved into being full of shit. Pity, since I've kind of expected him to kick off his non-furry comedy career hard enough to come back with a vengeance. But no, he has to be butt hurt about being shown the door, and about feeling like Kage betrayed him despite Kage having no say in giving him the boot to begin with.

One day the full story of how Kage got overruled by his own Anthrocon underlings, and saw his drinkin' buddy 2 get cancelled from the con, must be told.

It's always funny to see this; in any deal where people end up in some 'leadership' kind of role, even in a bullshit one like in a nerd fandom, they get complacent and think they'll be da king forever. 2's been dethroned, Kage's on the way down... you'd think their successors like Boozy would see that and understand but come their day, they'll be just as sad and surprised when they get deposed.

I think the closest we're gonna get is that 2 was a victim of Kage's control over how the fandom was presented to the media, ie "don't be a degenerate in front of the cameras". Enter the Anthrocon board, whom Kage has given the power to ban people so that that responsibility wouldn't fall on him, and they took that power and went with it knowing Kage's pleas would fall on deaf ears.

Edit: A word.

It’s one of those stories that’s more sad than funny, unfortunately.

There’d been a lot of complaining internally about the position he held getting prime-time billing from many departments. For years it had been bubbling up, with board members growing fed up with his increasingly erratic behavior. After a few internal shake-ups, particularly around programming, the decision was made that he “wouldn’t be booked this year“ as the convention was starting to block out its schedule grid.

Even though there was some call from inside for the convention to distance itself from the wild stuff 2’d been saying, it was ultimately decided that it would just be done as quietly as possible. New year, new fanbase, new direction, thanks for your service. At that point in time Kage was still all in on defending him, and the jury was out on whether or not it was a permanent change. His participation wasn’t feasible because of the direction the winds were blowing in the fandom, but there was always the possibility he‘d be back.

As I recall, Kage insisted on bringing this news to 2 personally, and there was even the option presented to allow himself to position it as his “stepping aside to allow new performers time on stage.” Of course, 2 immediately (within hours) ran to twitter and completely blew up and exploded. The schedule hadn’t been announced, the convention had made no statement. This started an entire shitstorm, whipped the internet into a frenzy, and began a series of threats that people would ”cancel their plans to attend“ and some vague threats of violence. I think Kage’d expected that his friend would handle this reasonably considering their history and that he’d had the guts to bring him the news directly, but it did not play out like that. Last I hear, Kage had texted him something along the lines of “do you intend to destroy Anthrocon?” and received no response. They don’t talk anymore. He’s since apologized to the board for all this.

Ultimately 2 was the one who made his removal from the stage permanent, by being exactly the guy everyone expected him to be. His ability to self-inflict wounds is profound.

I only barely know who this guy is, from a decade ago, from two specific outbursts (Portal of Evil misunderstanding and his "poisoning"), and all of this sounds immediately believable.

You'd think a guy pushing 50 would have some kind of restraint or ability to put a spin on things.

This is quite enlightening. I'm sure I'm not the only one here who'd love to see those receipts.

He in fact was not better than that

Shitbird still doesn't have a real job, but fell to irrelevance where he didn't merit a post for a year. I checked his Youtube, but it's very thin on content for an edgy ranter. Same shit different year. In his world it's always 2003, he still has followers who aren't overwhelmed with content from tech corps, and he can hold their attention with frantic joke-mimicking word salad. Fart jiggle giggle boogers!

I don't think anyone talks about him at all any more.

2 is apparently trying to achieve relevance again after it was announced that he is the guest of honor at a new Oklahoma convention called Free Fur All run by Nicole Reno and their husband Fox Reno. People are saying Nicole is Peacewolfactual though I haven't bothered to check.

It's pretty simple. Rigel and Xydexx hate 2. Rigel because him and Kage are bunkmates (if you know what I mean) and doesn't like to share. Xydexx has no sense of humor. They've been packing the AC board for years. Xydexx has been trying to get 2 out of AC for years.

Ah, and there it is…. Sounds like what thought: it was never about 2 being a lItErAL Not-Zeee, it’s about a gay furry being a gay dude and all catty and selfish.

it’s funny, I never thought about it but you are right, Xydexx is utterly humorless. And he’s one of those furries who always describes themselves as being ‘silly’, which they think is synonymous with ‘fun to be around’….. something I’ve heard Xydexx never is.

It's funny that, in essence, both sides have lost. Xydexx and Rigel are, IIRC, off the board, at least one of those being contentious. And Kage seems pretty quiet these days.

And 2 was a convenient target. He really was right-of-center (for furry) forever - hell, one of his old rants was about how dumb pride parades were - and they couldn't stand that. Then they cancelled the hell out of him and the only people who weren't giving him shit were the alt crowd. So of course he went over.

None of this excuses the pretty lulzy behavior of either side. It's all fun to watch.

It's funny that you call it "Rigel and Xydexx packing the AC board" when they resigned in consecutive years over not getting their way, most specifically Rigel.

But particularly related to 2, as was mentioned by Definitely Clearly Not Xydexx Dishing Anthrocon Board Gossip up thread, 2 had his mainstage privileges revoked at Anthrocon, and all of the perks that went with it (hotel, airfare, etc). If he wanted to put on a show, he could have submitted a panel request like any other attendee, and paid for his membership, airfare, and hotel, like any other attendee. The entire fallout from the situation was his own fault, really, for not accepting that Anthrocon had wanted to give the spotlight to some new acts. He could have gracefully bowed, stepped aside, and still been a fandom darling whose past thought crimes were forgiven. But he opted to pitch a fit and try and drag the convention instead.

His comedy started to get stale in the early 2010s (if it wasn't already), and while his show was still popular at AC, it was mostly with younger furs who were told "You can't miss this," and older furs for whom his comedy just hit the right notes. And unlike Kage's Story Hour, where you're getting a story in addition to the comedy, 2's comedy act was just a Gen X furry trying to be funny and relevant to a room of mostly Millennials (and later Gen Z, too). Some of his observational humor was funny (I will forever be amused by "Abort the toast!"), but most of it, furry related and not, was just kind of crass. And that's pretty much why he got overshadowed by other furry comedians.

He really jumped the shark (as it were) when he tried to get a fucking giraffe noise over as a "2 Fan Mating Call"

I'm sure said fans would welcome the implication they get laid, especially in comparison to noted pooltoy fucker Xydexx.

2 is currently losing it on Twitter over how the fandom "wasn't started by LGBT".

He goes on to say there's "NO WAY" "LGBT" could have been involved in planning early furry cons, because "that organization" didn't exist then, whatever that means. He seems to imply that he's being particularly pedantic over this because the term "LGBT" didn't exist at the time.

This contradicts the tweet he made immediately before this one where he says that the organizers sexual orientation
"didn't matter".

I don't feel like archiving the rest of this shit because it's taking too long, but he keeps pulling this "I was THERE" card, which is impossible because he's not THAT old. I'm old enough to remember when his rants weren't incoherent babbling about stupid shit like this.
