Email 2014-July-10 Chris cries over aspergers

Well that's quite a u-turn on the subject of aspergers for a start, and then there's him saying he never understood how to love himself. Chris' problem is in the exact opposite direction, his interactions with others are entirely self centred and he's absolved himself of every unpleasant action he's ever committed.
"Meet the new boss, same as the old boss"

Okay....being an animator, it takes a lot for a film to make me cry. I bawled like a little kid during this film. I'm not too terribly surprised he cried. I guess it goes to show he might have some semblance of humanity?

My whole class was super depressed for a few days after watching this. For those you who like stop motion, I highly suggest watching this. It's an AMAZING film. Depressing, yet amazing.

People who love themselves are confident and treat themselves well at least. Chris has neither of these traits. He a series of insecurities and failures. He's lived in a shithole for almost 32 years and refuses to do anything that would benefit him in the long or short term. That is not what people who love themselves do.
You forgot the part about being raised by old, senile parents, but whatever. I'm still surprised that Chris got all teary-eyed over a film featuring someone with Aspergers. Granted it's an animated film, but still pretty damn impressed.

Now to wait for him to go back on that and start hating the 'Spergers again.

I think what I am most curious about in this, is what made Chris change how he left about Aspergers? I mean it's progress to see that he no longer views it as "taking the limelight away from autists", but really him speaking about it without flipping his shit surprised me.

I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks.

The CWCki seems to indicate that his last public comment about Aspergers was his Autism Tutorial in February 2011, in which he made characteristically vicious attacks on the illness. We can only speculate as to what might have caused him to come around, but my first guess would be the psychological treatment he received as part of his sentence. Maybe someone was able to talk some sense into him.

Wait a minute...
"Aspergers (or autism)"
Since when he accept the connection?!

It's highly unlikely, but maybe he leaned about the merger of autism and Asperger's in the DSM V.

I've never come across any details of this mandatory treatment and, being tangentially familiar with the American justice system, can't help but wonder whether it was a mere formality he was simply rubber-stamped through.

He had to get an evaluation, which he passed successfully.

The way I see it, Chris makes every film a very personal experience, homing in on similarities between his life and the story and sometimes finding himself an avatar through which to experience the story. This time his chosen avatar happened to have Aspergers instead of the true and honest autism, but it was not the focus of the story, and therefore Chris was not threatened by it.

tl;dr: His views on Aspergers have not changed, they just weren't relevant at this time.

Seems like a reasonable estimation. If he projected onto the movie so successfully... well it's almost like HFA and Aspergers are the same thing :tomgirl:

Chris is a sad lonely autistic man desperate for companionship. Of course the movie tugs at his heartstrings. The difference being that in Max & Mary, Max is just a lonely fellow looking for friendship whereas Chris is a fat pervert looking for easy booty and a sugar momma. Kind of takes the romance right out of the comparison.
And don´t forget, he probably just changed the character of Max to himself. I firmly believes *straightens my back* he can´t cry for someone else but for his own accord.

He made another comment later that year, in the Calling Out saga.

He could have actually liked the film so much that he glossed over a major character flaw...Not to mention it was an amazing Phillip Seymour Hoffman movie.

This is because Chris's autism makes it very difficult for him to see things from anyone else's point of view (this could potentially be learnt by rote, but Chris has shown no interest in doing do except when it benefits him - for example, in his comic, a woman shows no interest in Chris - and Chris, both in-universe and out, literally cannot even imagine why).
