I'm not sure how this makes it any better. Chris did not have the mental faculties to realize that a string of random babes on the internet trying to get with him was too good to be true. If he believed it was true, why would he just walk away from it all? Chris also stupidly believed that his beloved Sonichu trademark was at risk. Why would he ignore that?
People leveraged the things they knew would get Chris to respond. They falsely offered him things that they knew he couldn't refuse. That's exactly why it was cruel.
I don't think Chris falling for the troll sweethearts was quite as dumb as people make it out to be. Not that it wasn't dumb, just not epically dumb.
In a lot of ways, it was a calculated risk. He was always suspicious people were trolling him. But I got the sense he felt like it was a good idea to risk trolling if there was a chance it could actually be a sweetheart.
The dumbest part is that his troll shields were not perfect at removing trolls but they were much more likely to be effective at removing actual women. If Chris is actually the way he sees himself and is attractive to some women, one thing guaranteed to put off someone making a casual inquiry over the internet is going through a screening process.
