I think I speak for very many Republicans when I say the party should be economically nationalist and protectionist, militarily isolationist and culturally libertarian. And that's what Trump is giving us.
I broadly agree, but I don't think Trump's economic policies are actually protectionist. Perhaps if you had to describe them in but a single word, "protectionist" would be the best word. The times when he drops the act and speaks seriously though, like some of his Davos speeches betray that he has a fairly complex (if heterodox) theory of economics.
I don't think that he's so much for protectionism and against lassez faire capitalism, its that a lot of what has been sold to Americans under the guise of lassez faire capitalism is actually complete horseshit where giant, international megaconglomerates and NGOs operate as some sort of latter-day trade guilds, buying politicians worldwide on the cheap and raping everyone's wallet to the maximum sustainable degree forever.
