23 baltimore schools have zero students good at math. - you'd think at least a handful of them would be good at math, jesus fuck

BALTIMORE (WBFF) — Baltimore is facing a devastating reality as the latest round of state test scores are released.

23 Baltimore schools have zero students proficient in math, state test results reveal (WBFF

WBFF analyzed the results and found a shocking number of Baltimore City schools where not a single student is doing math at grade level.
“We're not living up to our potential,” said Jovani Patterson, a Baltimore resident who made headlines in Jan. 2022, when he filed a lawsuit against Baltimore City Schools. The suit claims the district is failing to educate students and, in the process, misusing taxpayer funds.

“We, the taxpayer, are funding our own demise,” Patterson said at the time.

Patterson was born in Baltimore. He's seen the failures firsthand, but when WBFF showed him the latest test results for the city, he was momentarily rendered speechless.

“My immediate reaction is, take your kids out of these schools,” said Patterson.

The Maryland State Department of Education recently released the 2022 state test results known as MCAP, Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program.

Baltimore City’s math scores were the lowest in the state. Just 7% of third through eighth graders tested proficient in math, which means 93% could not do math at grade level.

But that’s not all. WBFF combed through the scores at all 150 City Schools where the state math test was given. In 23 Baltimore City schools, there were zero students who tested proficient in math.

It just sounds like these schools, now, have turned into essentially babysitters with no accountability,” said Patterson. “This is the future of our city. We’ve got to change this.”
Among the list of 23 schools, there are 10 high schools, eight elementary schools, three middle/high schools and two elementary/middle schools.

Exactly 2,000 students, in total, took the state math test at these schools. Not one could do math at grade level.

“These kids can't do math. You're not preparing them to buy groceries. You're not preparing them to do accounting, to count their own money. You're not preparing them to read contracts and negotiate salaries,” said Patterson.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore delivered his first State of the State address last week.

“We made the largest investment in public education by any governor in our state’s history,” Moore said during his speech, making his feelings about public education clear. It’s one of his top priorities.

“We can no longer separate our vision for economic prosperity from the duty to make Maryland’s public schools the best in the nation,” Moore said.

After the State of the State address, WBFF reached out to Moore’s office, asking to speak with him about his plan to improve education. Before becoming governor, Moore lived in Baltimore. WBFF wanted to ask him how he plans to help city students, especially those who attend the 23 schools.

Moore’s office did not respond, but City Schools did send WBFF a statement with steps it’s taking to improve math scores, including professional development for teachers, summer learning and an extended learning period at the end of the day.

The statement said, in part, “We're confident these instructional strategies will help us regain the momentum and progress we experienced before the pandemic.”

Zero percent. What are you preparing these kids for?” said Patterson. “Are we expecting these kids to kill off themselves? I mean, we see the number of teen shootings happening just this year. What jobs are we preparing these kids for? That's the future.”
WBFF found three additional schools where zero students tested proficient in math, which we did not include in the list of 23. One of those schools is for incarcerated youth, and the other two are for students with disabilities. It’s also important to note that another 20 Baltimore City Schools had just one or two students test proficient in math.

He also somehow managed to defeat the IRS. He deserves honorary Economics and Political Science degrees for that.
He's still on the hook to the IRS, getting payment plan after payment plan for doing his taxes wrong for years. He managed to defeat the bankruptcy court who never questioned him saying he had 5k a month in business expenses to play video games.

Not to mention being for the '1+1 can = 3 because math is racist' type bullshit?
From what I've seen the problem is less "math is racist" and more actual racist math, the softbrain natural-language approach (as seen on facebook):

How much is 10 x 0? We take ten and repeat it how many times? Zero. So, not at all. The answer is 10.

The main culprit seems to be activity book publishers, those sell well, because each student consumes a copy, and turn brains into mush.

These activity books even go against woke education's stated goal to "empower indigenous ways of knowing", by preventing children from acquiring and expressiing a sense for mathematics. Apparently groups of humans have an innate capacity for developing language, I don't find it implausible that a "but I ate dinner yesterday" can develop arithmetics, proportions, and basic applied geometry. Some ancient civilizations were incapable of abstractions needed to do proofs but did rather advanced applied math and flourished just fine. Thales was legendary for understanding similar triangles and measuring pyramid height in the 6th century BC, but the pyramids were 2 thousand years older than him.

I'm sure the valedictorian at these kinds of schools is pretty much blanket rewarded for the kid with the best attendance.
Powerlevel: Valedictorian at my school was chosen by popular vote among the students, so of course it went to the party animal with a rich dad who was promising to have the graduation bash to end all grad parties. Was rather embarrassing to the administration when their beloved valedictorian got drunk and/or stoned out of his mind and wrapped his car around a tree right after graduation.

My final lesson of high school was that honors with no objective metric behind them are as good as ones self-given.

That's really dumb. What the hell else did they think was going to happen? Was the change to popular vote a recent thing? If it was, do you know the reason? I have heard stories of several smart kids burning themselves out trying to compete for Valedictorian for... some reason. At my school, it was chosen by gpa and I cannot for the life of me remember who it was or what the fuck they talked about.
With that said, at least it's a goal to get you through high school with a GPA that may at least get you a scholarship.
When you say he wrapped his car around a tree, did he get injured/killed?

How the fuck are they supposed to do that Mr. Patterson? The school your child is forced to go to is determined by their zip code unless you want to pay out of pocket which if these people were capable of I'm sure they probably would already be doing. Christ, Maryland charges you to homeschool your own fucking kid. They want them dumb, it's by design.

>He thinks this isn’t a machination of Phil to enter politics
I pity you.

Yes, new that year. As far as I heard it went back to grades the year after. Either they were specifically hostile to the real valedictorian or the "accident" encouraged them to rethink.

I don't remember what mine said except it was mostly shoutouts to people. Not surprising.

Yeah, my school wasn't big into that. Being a nerd myself I knew the high-GPA kid in our year, he got screwed over by the admins overall.

When you say he wrapped his car around a tree, did he get injured/killed?
Came out of it OK, he got lucky. Then a few years later got into motorbikes and found a brief career repainting a house with brain colors.

Less than 100 per school? In a major city? Are only X percent of the students taking this test?

I'm not from Baltimore but I don't understand these numbers.

Only certain grades take the test every year, not all the students. Usually the last grade tested is 10, but can vary by state.

Maybe it's not so much about the schools as much as it is about the blacks?

I am curious about the diversity metrics of the concerned establishments. Both on the student and teacher side.

Sorry to make the obvious reference when Baltimore comes up, but the fucking wire was talking about this 20 years ago. You would have thought that when one of the most famous and popular shows ever made shit talks you as harshly as season 4 did, (prez was even teaching maths for fucks sake) you would make at least a token effort fix your shit.

You could send in the best teachers and all the best, shiny new equipment, if the students are not taught at home and in their community to value education and not be niggers, it is all for naught.

how is this possible? some asian or white kid should be able to get enough points even if they dont have a good math teacher.
Article has a contradiction:

Exactly 2,000 students, in total, took the state math test at these schools. Not one could do math at grade level.
So one of those statements is wrong, but both are fucked up either way.
