3 Body Problem - Adaptation of the novel from Netflix and the Game of Thrones guys, Season 1 out now

So this is just the first book? If so, hopefully A Dark Forest gets adapted pretty quickly because that's when the story really gets batshit insane and interesting. I remember having to sort of make myself push through a couple of parts in Three Body Problem, though it's by all means a mad decent book. It just has that "origin story" thing going on. Books 2 and 3 are fucking awesome though

The Netflix version seems like a hard pass. The Chinese animated version is way better. It actually sticks to the source material.

All I want is an unconventional take on space opera. What I get is diversity, of course, because I am not allowed to have nice things.
Watch the Chinese animated version. The render quality is very good unlike the other Chinese shows that look like PS2 video game cutscenes. It's called San Ti and should be on your favorite anime streaming site.

I was curious about what r/aznidentity had to say regarding this adaptation, as they consistently express concerns over Hollywood's racism against Asians. According to them, it's filled with WMAF (White Male, Asian Female) propaganda.

This kinda turns me off of it. I like the books the way they are. I wonder if they are replacing characters or just adding new white dudes to appeal to white dudes. I guess it doesn't matter much if you didn't read the books. The books already have white dudes in them. But the vast majority of important characters are Chinese. I guess this is kind of like how the protagonist of Snowpiercer seemed really tacked on and bland compared to other characters.

I’ve watched the first three episodes and it’s not as bad as I thought it was going to be.

I thought the Tencent live action version, which had thirty episodes covering the first book, dragged it out a bit too long, so I’m interested to see if squeezing it into eight episodes will be the complete opposite.

I‘m also keen to see if Netflix will renew it.

They got totally spooked and pulled the plug on 1899, another big budget sci fi series, by the creators of Dark, after their first season.
Netflix reported 1899 had underperformed, but when their streaming figures came out for the first time last year, it turned out it actually had done surprisingly well.
Just not well enough to cover the costs compared to churning out dirt cheap to make reality tv unfortunately.

It’s a fucking crime because Dark is a masterpiece, and 1899 would likewise only have had a story length of three seasons, which were already mapped out, and Netflix just canned it. Whereas we are on season 6 of Love is Blind, season 3 of Too Hot to Handle, etc. etc. etc.

It all depends on first week viewing figures. So, good luck Three Body…..

I tried to listen to the audiobook, and like three quarters of the cast felt like it was literally Chan, Chin, Ching, Chang, and Chong and I could follow along with who was who but I couldn't often understand which name was being spoken.

Also it was boring.
Audiobooks are for subhumans. Quit gooning and learn to read.

wonder how many of the chinese cast will be replaced by nogs
Depends on how much shoe polish they have spare.

I couldn't get through the first few episodes. A pity, because I loved Wandering Earth.

I am really struggling to even finish watching the season. I’m on episode six. I love sci fi, it’s my favourite genre, and I loved these books, and watched the whole Tencent 30 episode adaptation of the first book.

I‘ve no idea how they’ve managed to make a series about alien first contact so bloody boring. Episode six has just slogged through about twenty minutes of a beach cottage holiday centring on one character‘s cancer and unrequited love interest.

There is little to no chatter online about this release either, and given its cost to Netflix, that isn’t good. I doubt it’s getting its second season renewal. It’s been a massive flop.

I haven't read the books, but overall I enjoyed the series but there were noticeable flaws. It felt like another production that still needed work on the scripts. The human drama was a mixed bag. Some stuff was good, most I didn't care for. Why are these top scientists so young and all drug addicts? I don't think the writers are versed enough in scientific thinking and were better at fantasy. I can't remember the movie The Martian but loved the book and I wanted more science nerding out in that displayed in this. They never really had those scenes to establish the characters as great minds, we're just told they were. The science just happens.

There's a retarded scene with a ship in the Panama Canal. Where the show explains how crucial it is to damage the ship. Then does the most destructive thing possible to it.

The balance of the alien plot versus the relationship of the characters was completely off. A lot of the character stuff was fairly pointless. Even various conflicts and things happening were really of no purpose to the plot. Did those characters need to be in a relationship to then break up and it's of no point? It's drama which is really just stated. Nothing of any interest or emotional investment to the viewer to be had. By far the most interesting character stuff was a character with cancer and where that plot goes. Not the unrequited love he has for another character.

As for the diversity and shit. It did lean heavily into the women, but in the larger themes of it all and where it's going. I think that's because it's actually leaning more into the men. It literally has a Chinese woman who fucked over the human race. A white British man who is in charge of fixing the shit she caused.

The series as a whole was just a lot of build up and wasted time on inconsequential plot, with the background of a really interesting plot and where the show will go. I enjoyed it, even if it dragged a bit but the potential is for where it goes and it will live or die by how they do the next season.

No idea how they spent so much money on this.

What about this trilogy cements them as your favorite? Read the first after being nagged into it and had to force myself to finish it. Not terrible, just really not a compelling piece of writing.
last 20 pages of book 2 makes the entire series worth it, genuinely amazing.

I did some research, they made Luo Ji a black man. They took the single most compelling character in the series and made him black for no reason. Asian people cant have SHIT

Books 2 and 3 are fucking awesome though
It took me two attempts to get through the first book. The first half is a slog. The other two I devoured and I’ve read the series again because I think about it a lot. It gave me some genuine existential dread. The “Singer” is one of the most terrifying things in any book I’ve ever read.

This really irritated me. I suspected that’s what was happening but couldn’t quite believe until the wallfacer episode. However, I cannot stand the ridiculous actress they cast as a 25 year old nanotech genius business mogul that seems to never actually do any work other than make snide comments and glare at everyone all the time. That casting decision was so, so bad.

All that said, Benedict Wong (the cop), Rosalind Chao (the commie hater/alien lover), and Liam Cunningham (the rich guy that gets shit done) are great in the show. I was also curious how they were going to depict the human computer and ship scene and both were a fun watch.

Like everyone will say, the books are the way to go. Especially if you want to get far more detail on the science stuff.

Edit to add:
@Screamer_2 Why are these top scientists so young and all drug addicts
I thought about this because I was going to agree it was dumb, but in the books, a lot of the main characters are young, post college age to early 30’s. But they didn’t all go to school together or know each other. No one was sitting around smoking weed all day but the character the black guy is playing was an alcoholic. I think the reason they’re depicted as friends who went to school together in the show is to condense a lot of separate plot lines that eventually converge in the book. I could be off because it’s been a minute since I read the books but I believe the ages are close. Also, the unrequited love thing was a bit off in the show but it actually has a profound impact on the story later.
