STOCKHOLM (AP) — Four chimpanzees, one of which is wounded, were on the loose inside a building in a Swedish zoo on Thursday, a day after they escaped from their enclosure. Three others have been shot dead.
Swedish officials and media said the wounded animal has not received veterinary attention because no one can get inside the building at the Furuvik Zoo safely.
The chimps are inside the monkey house, but the staff have not been able to get the three uninjured ones back into their enclosure, the animal park management said in a statement. The wounded animal returned to its enclosure on its own.
“This means that we cannot yet allow people to move freely in the park and we are still on full alert,” the zoo said.

The situation is “extremely serious and tragic, both for our animals and our employees,” the animal park said, adding it did not know how the primates got out.
The animals got out of their enclosure on Wednesday, prompting the zoo to alert the authorities. Three chimps were shot dead by local staff, while the fourth was wounded. The zoo told Swedish media that the animals had to be killed because there was not enough tranquilizer for all of them.
“Our focus right now is to get an overview of where the four are now so that we can start working on getting them back to their enclosures in a safe way,” Annika Troselius, a spokeswoman for the group operating the zoo, told Swedish broadcaster SVT.
“We have to think about people’s lives and safety in the first place. No employees are allowed to work in close contact with animals like this.”
The Furuvik zoo is located near Gavle, 165 kilometers (100 miles) north of Stockholm. It is part of an amusement park. According to the park’s web page, it is also the only primate research station in the Nordic countries.
It is not the first time in recent months that animals have briefly escaped from Swedish zoos. In October, a venomous king cobra escaped from its terrarium at a zoo in Sweden but returned by itself after a week. Daniel Roth of the Swedish Zoo Association told Swedish news wire TT that he sees no connection between the events.

Why are chimps being kept at all in an area with a climate that gets this cold? Just stupid. Zoos aren't generally that popular in the west anymore anyway, right? What's this worth? Now they're dead because you're terrible at keeping animals.
There's probably some sort of heating in the enclosures for tropical animals. I hope Planet Zoo wasn't lying to me. If it was, I'm taking my millions of inbred peacocks elsewhere.

You can barter or chill with them on a good day is why. Despite them being the only ones that'd actually tear you limb from limb unlike gorillas or orangutans which would just drag you around a bit or get a big grabby maybe they can make pretty good workout partners.

I find chimps fascinating. They're right vicious little bastards but I have no doubt we were much the same back when we were related. I see so much humanity in them despite the bad rep they get.

Like look at how he looks back to see if the human is keeping up. Fuck yeah, go lil buddy.

They get a bad reputation because they're basically us with a lower average IQ and fur. It's like looking in a defective mirror while hungover.

It's kind of unclear if this was an unscheduled chimp event with all the hollerin' and hostility that would imply or if a silly monke opened the door to their enclosure and they started to wander. It would be pretty saddening if they weren't acting hostile but the zoo's containment/safety policy says shoot first just to be safe.

I’ve been to furuvik a few times (it’s v close to where family live). It’s like an old fashioned funfair with an animal park added on. It’s a bit chavvy and tattered but the animals have always seemed cared for.
The chimp enclosure is an artificial island with a small moat and some low knee height wires around it on two and a bit sides, and the building on the rest (yes it’s heated, all the animals I’ve seen there have been well cared for.) - so they have a kind of overpass bit where the height and wires would make escape hard, one side is fully vertical with glass, but those two most and wire sides I reckon a determined chimp could get out of. All the apes have indoor areas with separate cages off bits so they can clean one bit out.
But I’m still surprised they shot them. The park closes in the winter so there’s no public there. It is close to residential areas but I think this seems like pure panic. An adult chimp can rip you apart, they’re not to be trifled with but you’d think they’d have to have well drilled escape procedures.
Didn’t hear they’d shot the baby - that’s sad. What a mess.

Can't take any risks. You never know how a wild animal will act. People like chimps, but that's no reason to keep your guard down around them... I mean there's no record of Bonzo losing it on set suddenly, but there's also interviews with people who have lost their faces and other body parts in chimp attacks you can watch on Youtube.

One dead monkey made art and was the Crown Princess's favorite monkey.

rest in power king
Literally all this story is missing is them dissecting and disemboweling the baby chimp and liquifying it in lye to make sure there's no pesky covid at this point like the fucking walrus.
God damn if they do that shit again I'm just gonna hate these EU fuckers even more.
