11 has so much polish mostly due to 9. They did not want a repeat. Dragon Quest is like if Ultima didn't stop releasing games or if Heroes of Might and Magic was still a thing. It's held to be something that sacred in Japan.

I looked it up and Wikipedia said IX had glowing reviews. Famitsu gave it a perfect 40 but then again, they gave FFXIII a high score and even Japanese gamers bitched about that one. I guess the really autistic fans were the culprit in that case? And from what I gathered, IX was where the series decided to take the oddball turn, which explains why X was a straight up MMO.

They've been at their reality escape of choice for a long-ass time, life was probably a disappointment for them otherwise. If their choice thing then turns into a disappointment too there's not much left, is it? You're also less likely to believe that your life will magically turn around and become something else with 40 than you'd be with 20. This is their thing and if they feel it gets ruined for them, might as well go all the way. Kinda surprised we don't see it more often tbqh. People get routinely older and older and age better and better while the world gets more relentless with people being deemed "useless" (especially the older they are) at the same time. We might if all the 20-something incels age to be 40.
