I don't remember much about FMA except the dog scene. I didn't find it interesting when it was on Adult Swim. I do remember Inyuasha only because they would scream each other's names so much every episode it's written into my fucking soul. KAGOME!!! INYUASHA!!!!

a lot of anime people try to recommend that is not goonbait is just like "cool" in the how an 8 year old boy sees cool. Robots fighting, magic, over the top action sequences, and plots that are very over the top.

I will suggest exactly two anime that I think have serious artistic merit and lack any gooner energy.

The first is mushishi

It is an anthology serious following a sort of spiritual medicine man walking across a pre modern Japan dealing with mushi which are sort of like spirit germs that cause weird shit to happen. Good music, it's essentially just a collection of fairy tales with a reccuring character in the form of the traveler.

It's good and it's a very relaxing peaceful show. It's something you could watch with your grandma.

My absolute favorite anime of all time is Legend Of The Galactic Heroes.



It's a political scifi show that ran from 1988 to 1997. It's not based off light novels or manga but actual books. It is 110 episodes long with a couple of movies and extremely high quality.

Long story short it's the story of the conflict between the Free Planets Alliance and The Galactic Empire. However it does the exact opposite of what something like star wars does.

The empire is not the bad guy, neither side is. They are both sort of representatives of real world political systems and their consequences. The empire is sort of an Austrian autocracy and the free planet alliance is a sort of Western democracy.

The entire show is framed like a history lesson with a narrator and it has an entirely classical music score. It is extremely classy and in 110 episodes it never gets creepy or horny once.

It's so completely devoid and divorced from anime tropes I genuinely feel weird discussing it in the context of "anime"

The two greatest commanders from both sides meet once and they just have an intelligent discussion about freedom and the consequences of democratic choice and whether the people have the choice to vote for their own demise.

It even goes over the history of the goldenbaum dynasty which is the founding dynasty of the empire and describes its degeneration with examples like one of the emperors castrating a choir of boys so they never lose their falsetto and the show just kinda goes "that's right, he was a homosexual"

it can be really slow but it's just so so good.

What's the point of YGO Abridged when the dub is already an abridged version?

The worldbuilding was always stupid and mostly saved by a few good ideas (for instance, having most of the early story casualties be from starvation and having the government send hundreds of thousands onto their deaths because they don't have the resources to handle them). Just read the uprising arc again and you'll see that Isayama was always retarded deep down, nice "politics" you got there bud.

off the top of my head, these are some manga/manhwa I'm paying attention to ATM

Rebuild World has an interesting premise set in a future where the world is in ruins and everyone scavenges for old world technology. Protagonist is an orphan boy that finds an old world A.I. that helps him survive (less god fantasy than other manga, fan service isn't over bearing)

Surviving the game as a Barbarian is the only modern manhwa I've read that isn't utter garbage (It's still a typical god fantasy setting but in a video game). It still doesn't hold a candle to Change Guy or Veritas

Kingdom is consistently interesting with how it portrays war and politics in ancient china (the anime is shit)

S.T.A.R Strike it rich It's a tournament fighting manga. It's a female version of kengan asura by the same artist, but I like it. The plot isn't as lazy and convoluted as Kengan Omega where they revive the protagonist from the dead and make a clone of him.

It's objectively true though.
The war works like any shonenslop would, with characters having soft powerlevels based on how badass they are. Yang is a single man but when he's not there the FPA is outright saying they don't have a chance and need to stall for him. They throw hundreds of ships at the enemies in stalling tactics JUST so they can wait for Yang to make the magical decisions (read: half circle formations lmao) to defeat the enemy (and it works, he just does it)

Thankfully LOGH is also moeslop (the best kind) and has all kinds of charming endearing characters

I've actually read the Big Order manga before. It was pretty fuckin shit. Only part that somewhat interesting in a retarded way was the part where it turns out protag-kun's crippled kawaii imouto is actually a 5D chessmaster insane bitch, but it got lame again after it turned out she was Merely Pretending so that protag-kun would kill her because something something I don't care.

It's Russian Literature.

The writer presents two diametrically opposed philosophies in fiction form. And then has them fight to the death.

It's actually rather an interesting quirk of history how Russians are so capable of understanding at an emotional level alien beliefs and cultures without actually embracing them.

And then add another layer of a Japanese man high on reading Russian literature deciding to write a sci fi epic in the same style as War and Peace about Representative Democracy vs. Aristocratic Monarchy.
