After everything there are still so many users that want the site to be successful and survive in modern day. A lot of things could easily be solved if the owners actually communicated with the user base and used it as crowdsourcing to better the site either on the tech side or moderation/specific board issues or problems, funding whatever it is. Instead they choose to keep the user base completely in the dark about everything and not explain shit.

They are far from worthless, there are good reason why we use them and have used them for bartering throughout history. But you can also look at points in history when they were considered worthless baggage you would trade for a pouch of gunpowder in a heartbeat. Post-apocalypse, at the very least a couple of years since it starts is precisely the kind of function-over-form survival situation where PMs are the last thing on your mind.
