I am just awaiting when someone deploys Mastodon instances that will serve as 4chan.
At one point I had hope that a lot of forums and the like could transition (lol) to federated software because it would make jannies unnecessary and no longer have so much power but the fediverse is full of autistic spergs who are more interested in slapfighting than accomplishing anything so that dream died pretty quick.

This can work if you have an owner/mod/janny that runs their board instance with actual passion and transparency.
What is more likely to happen is some schizo grabbing and sitting on a popular board topic and removing shit he doesn't like, without any mechanism to challenge him. Good luck getting everyone to move.

Can’t wait to watch all the battered wives come crawling back to their shitty obsolete site (now with less boards) because they either were too stupid to do altchan tourism or they are too incompatible with sapience to appreciate things like multiple file posting or more than two flavors of board css. Rapeape learned literally nothing, this was an opportunity to build anew and he chose the lazy patching path and now so will the users learn nothing in turn.

It's not coming back. Rare Pepes will be sold on the black market and exchanged for food/bullets. They will be like bottle caps in Fallout.
I preferred the bullet based economy of Metro, even Fallout becomes an ammo based economy with bottlecaps being a kind of exchange currency. Its why I always laugh at boomer preppers and their silver and gold.
They're not ready for the brass/lead/copper based economy. ngmi

I think you overestimate the level of bots and shills outside of the main popular boards. I seriously doubt 90% of the shitposting for instance in the starsector threads on /vst/ or the /mug/ threads on /sp/ was non-organic, there is no profit nor ideology to push in the majority of fun threads I hung out in. Something like /uhg/ or /chug/ on /pol/? Yeah there's a good reason I don't go into those plagued threads. The worst is /k/, that boards jannies and mods should be hung, drawn and quartered for raping what used to be a comfy board for discussing firearms.
/chug/ is good though, you can actually discuss whats happening.

This email is alarming for me as someone who is a nerd/technically minded.

A salt in computing changes an input value on a static level. Basically it adds randomization. So for secure tripcodes it's a unique value. Basically a unique salt might take the name field secure tripcode output from Pointless Debater##cockgobblingnamefag to Pointless debater!!e83icn. The salt value being leaked would have reduced the value of secure tripcodes to pointless because that transformation value is now public for trying to bruteforce trips (I did this circa 2010 to get non-secure tripcodes with an AMD Graphics cardwith specific words in them for the meme because I was an idiot [and maybe I still am]; computing power has only become cheaper over time).

Okay, nerd explanation of what a salt is in computing and why should you care at all - that and other bulletpoints like deleting /f/ and disabling PDF upload seems to mean that:
  1. They are bringing the existing Yotsuba site software back. Else the change of the salt value would be implicit. Also disabling PDF upload (probably because they don't have any alternative library and it's not a highly used feature necessary to restore the site).
  2. They are viewing it as "horse bolted, close the barn door". Now, not completely - in addition to disabling the PDF upload they talked about updated OSes. That's a more obvious security step to take but it really ignores the security of most of the site software. The possibilities that the leaking of all the site code (which by all accounts is very low quality) gives other potential entry points is still high. But that could have been a security move or just mandated by their newer hardware having a minimum operating system version higher than the FreeBSD version the site was on.
The good news is if they're reusing the site code then the way the site "feels" when it's returned should hopefully be the same. At least visually and functionally. If they're using the same database then post numbers would still be current as of when they yanked the plug. They may nuke every board but you wouldn't have to start at thread #1 or some arbitrary value.

The risk is that they end up not fixing everything, and that the leak of the site code/files/how it's set up gives an attacker another way in that still works after all the patching. That's the potentially troubling part.

Only time will tell.

For me if I was a mod or jan on 4chan (never have, and never plan to be) my concern would be that they rush to get the site online and it gets hacked again. For the mods/jans already doxed willing to go back in hey it's already out there. But for new mods/jans? That's a lot of gambling with your personally identifiable information...

Tabletopwise, /tg/ didn't really use PDFs. The ShareThread had one as the OP, yes, but it could be reformatted. Most PDF sharing on /tg/ was through links to repositories.

Hello Sar. Please do the needful. Do not redeem.
/po is fucking dead then. they rely on pdf-files so much for sharing their "crease patterns" and instructions.

Idk, if you have 2 million militant jews who run "uber eats" style child trafficking rings, I'd say it's justified. Also calling ww1 a German chimpout is willful ignorance.
WW1 is more of a British/French chimpout over the mere possibility of a Russo-German union. The British Empire had a hardon for their railway and had been looking for an excuse to squash the rise of the German Empire. The Germans helping the Russians after their disastrous war with Japan was all the excuse they needed to prod France into backing their schizo war.

I never understood gold/silver preppers. If shit hits the fan I want food, water, shelter, ammo/guns, tools and working devices, resources that will let me survive ya know. Shiny doubloons? Get the fuck off my property you post-apocalyptic jew. Do leave the gold behind, shekellubber.

A pound of good steel is worth more than a pound of gold in such situations.
I suppose they are min-maxing for the late game once warlords start being decadent, but those people would rather devour you than trade unless you posses an equal or bigger force of arms, which you won't because your specced into future economics over bushcrafting.

I think as long as PDF upload is blocked the hack can't just be repeated as easily. Even with the source code leaked, you need to have a way to actually inject your code to the server somehow. Correct me if I'm wrong, but with the remaining file types (JPG, PNG, GIF, WEBM, MP4) there is no way to do that. The other way would be to use security holes in the server itself (operating system, whatever software they use for the web server, PHP, ...) but if they update it all there shouldn't be an obvious gaping hole there.

They might have also gone through the code in the meantime. The anons on Soyjak's /tech/ board they were already fixing the "OpenYotsuba" code for free.

They should just revert back to 2channel's futaba script, as some other anon here already said few pages ago. That software says a big FUCK YOU to mobilefaggots and other retards because the UI is straight from early 2000's.
