They initially spread as a critique of consumer culture and of like soy redditors who just unquestioningly repeat whatever they're told. It was on /qa/ where they sort of took on a life of their own after everyone got sick of them being posted constantly on other boards in lieu of an argument.

They only started raiding other boards because the jannies let other boards raid them constantly. The entire thing with /qa/ with is that it was initially meant as a way for people to provide feedback and kick around ideas to improve the site, but the 4chan staff isn't interested in actually improving the site. They got tired of all the criticism because they like sitting in their IRC circle jerk and ignoring all feedback, so they left the board up and let it constantly be spammed with off-topic garbage as like a snarky way of making fun of the people criticizing them. Which included allowing other boards to raid it constantly without stepping in. It's why it's so funny they had to close it and the heck happened because of that, they allowed that culture to fester.

Yeah I did a total 180 on jaks after /qa/ got a hold of them and that culture started. I was so sick of seeing them on /v/ constantly with some shitty green text because some Indian can't actually argue as points. But /qa/ help them take on a new life, they were genuinely some of the best OC to come out of 4chan in years so of course the jannies all hate it.
