I don't know much about the history of Christianity, but wasn't the early church all about ignoring the material world and suffering hardship as redemption for your sins? Like pain is actually a good thing because it brings you closer to Christ etc. It seems like they had all this shit pretty well worked out in the middle ages and it's been getting dumber ever since.

The church was the original state in a post-Roman Empire world, instituting progressive laws, helping the poor and downtrodden, not to mention the university system, intelligence, court system, etc. Once the separation of church and state happened, all it did was secularize this, which gave way to socialism, that is, secular Christianity. Now you could make the case that the separation - other than the obvious growing atheism amongst the elites - was to accelerate to a certain point where the church couldn't put up a fight.

Stuff like ignoring the material world only really works for hermit priests, but for the layman, it's meant to put them in line and for them not to get too cocky, so to speak. But yeah, you're right, the emphasis on works and the material world grew once the shift to North Europe happened and the whole Protestant work ethic was emphasized, with this eventually growing into the Industrial Revolution.
