The only possibility I could think of is if the email to the janitors alluding to new server hardware was essentially that they were planning to make this move to newer board software all along and the hack forced their hand... if true, either the timing of the hack is extremely extremely fortunate in that they were 99% done setting up the new hardware and about to cut over, or they are now bumrushing trying to get new board software finished to be setup.

I think it's more likely that they're scrambling to set something up before people flee to other sites in a vacuum, but I don't have any inside information on this.

To me, that sounds more like patching the existing site software rather than migrating to Vichan.

Another possibility is that they're essentially trying to buy time to not have the site become irrelevant from going offline. Clean install latest versions of everything, vanilla Vichan instance, let people play around as "the old site "you know and love is fixed", patch the old site at leisure without your userbase fleeing. A fairly vanilla instance on modern versions would probably have a low attack surface for direct exploits. Spam might be an issue though.

you're replying to bullshit because a vanilla vichan is terrible for both user and the moderation staff. 4chan had a pretty advanced mod panel that vichan can't compare with.

Reading /j/ leaks there was already people talking about shutting it down because it was usually off topic anyway, so this was probably just what forced the decision through after years of inaction.

Honestly, even if 4chan comes back after this, I’m done. I stayed for a few generals, and the occasional book recommendation from /lit/. But this is the final straw for me. I haven’t enjoyed using the site in a while, my favorite board (/int/) turned into nothing but a hub for racebait and screenshots, /lit/ is full of retards who don’t read, and I have more than enough books on my to read list. As it stands I (and most users) only stayed for the ocasional good thread that happened once a day if lucky (which grows rarer by the day). This hack just confirms what everyone thought, that Hiro doesn’t care about the site and uses it as a money printer, it has crushed any naive notion that 4chan will ever improve, or that the moderation team will ever give a shit. And after this hack, the last few remaining remnants of good posters will finally leave, leaving only the shitposters and bots.

Homemade dough. homemade tomato sauce with lots of garlic, red onions, celery, basil, oregano, fish sauce, and lemon. Toppings are chorizo, mozzarella, black olives, and mushrooms. Tons of olive oil in the dough, sauce, and as a finish on the toppings. Nothing out of the usualy but it's a still my favorite. Also love pineapple as a topping but don't use it everytime. Sour cream dressing with salt, pepper, garlic powder and lemon juice always is nice too.
