It might be a translation issue. Some of the most mainstream reprintings are godawful and written with the worst prose imaginable (the same can be said of Evola). In German it definitely flows better than the English copies I've seen.

And knowing 4chan I feel like Confederacy of Dunces would be popular among people who don't know that they're the butt of the joke. The main character is a schizoposter with serious Dunning-Krueger.
