The glownigger kikes that have taken control of 4chan probably didn't understand the zeitgeist of 4chan and still don't. All they know is somehow an anime discussion website somehow found it's way into the political landscape in the early 10s. They're probably trying to keep it alive ala Weekend at Bernie's style.

It's usually not a general-purpose strategy but a targetted one for specific, persistent types of threads, to try and reduce engagement through fear.

Someone had brought this whole phenomena up on /x/ the other day and the thread got raided/derailed completely and then purged by the jannies. I saw this infographic posted the other day but it too got almost insta-deleted by the mods and that's the only reason why I looked into it:

Whatever is going on, it's site-wide and they're clamping down on any meta-threads that bring it up.

Funnily enough the only good pokemon threads are outside of /vp/, so I think that's why people tolerate them.
If you want to make them even madder, say that most people in the thread don't even play the games and they only know the characters from porn. Surprisingly, you will have people openly admitting to that. From there, you can troll them by telling them they're lolicon pedos/furries/coomers/gooners and THEN you will see them trying to backpedal or call you a dirty chud for not wanting to see a dog fuck a 5 year old. Guaranteed to derail the thread regardless, even if it's filled with goon clowns then the few people who did come for pokemon will be disgusted and start arguing the ethics(or lack of) within the community, or start complaining about all the porn addicts in what is essentially a kid's franchise. Troons have already infected /pol/, namely the generals there. Good news is that these posters are too autistic to just "give up", no matter how bad it gets they will stay there and make lives difficult for the troons and the feds stationed there. I think this site has enough immunity against them even if it came to that, especially since Dear Feeder hates them personally.

Troons on 4chan is probably the very beginning of when I went from support to tolerance to grudging tolerance to neutrality to vague dislike. And then troons everywhere else moved me from that to active dislike to white hot hate.
