/sci/ and /g/ are usually good for one or two decent threads and the YLYL threads in /gif/ do occasionally have some new and funny videos if you can find a thread that is not 100% gay and interracial porn.

Project Chanology was the first cancer cell. That was the first time when "internet is srs bsns" stopped being a meme and causefags started using 4chan as their soapbox for their goals. That event set the precedent for every other happening and political shit influx that would happen later on.

Chanology, for the first time, changed a section of 4chan from a place where you could go to take a break from the real world to some battle ground for the current thing you had to do something about. It was "SRS BZNS!!!", but somehow for real.

The cancerous growth that later spiraled out of control might have started much earlier, had it not been for moot's disinterest in politics, which led him to shut the whole thing down.

'08 was around the time the internet slowly started to get recognised as a real force. I was still mostly on SA at the time but it was pretty cool at the time (between 2008-12) that internet stuff was finally getting the recognition it deserved, the internet-based artists, musicians, Let's Players, the memes, etc. In retrospect it was the beginning of the end.

I'm probably going to say the Fappening/Gamergate double-whammy. The site had been in decline since Chanology imo but I would say that those two events accelerated it. Moot had already sold out, was probably already preparing his exit plan to Google. I agree with @AnOminous that him wrecking the janny/mod team and selling it to Hiro was spiteful and spelled the definitive end. The 2016 Election and subsequent influx of literal retarded boomers and reddit refugees was just the nail in the coffin.

2014. Gamergate, the Fappening and moot leaving were the final three nails in the coffin of 4chan. I think most of the old internet died in 2014 and earlier, as the internet formed this final narrow shape it has taken now where everything looks like it's been formatted for a mobile screen and everything uses the same (circular) sources for information.

I want to agree with this but I also was there during the 2016 election and I would call 4chan anything but dead during that time. The energy on the site during 2015 and 2016 leading up to Trump winning was fucking electric. I've never experienced something like that before or since. The fappening, Gamergate then Moot leaving all did irreversible damage to 4chan but it still had one last hurrah imo.

Just reporting a thread I saw before it got deleted. They had a screenshot of their ban message saying permaban for politics in TV or something to that effect.

I should've put an asterisk with 2016. That year was like a one-off 4chan special or encore, where anons remembered what doing it for teh lulz meant by trying to get a celebrity tv host elected as the president. Even GBS on SA was good during that year, like it was /pol/-lite.

But it was just mostly that year, like a dead cat bounce. 2017 it went straight back into the sharp decline of 2014.
