I think ultimately, the biggest downfall of 4chan wasn't any outside force, but it's own flanderization. The people saying newfags ruined the site are kind of right. 4chan exploded in popularity multiple times, pretty much erasing the original culture. Normally, new users would acclimate to the existing culture, how people post, etc. But they came in such waves that it washed everything away. I remember when I saw threads that normally died after ten posts start hitting bump limit, because no one was taught to just ignore the bait.

It became a game of one upping each other. And yeah, 4chan was a place where anything went, and that made it good. I think that's why I don't like the sharty and soyjacks as a whole. It's a continuation of that race to the bottom that made it shit in the first place.

Likewise, the easiest way for mentally unstable retards to shit up a thread is to fuck with it some token amount to get the ball rolling and then using the witchhunt for who the shitter is as the real vehicle for derailing discussion. It requires much less effort than doing it themselves, because there are no shortage of retards who will deepthroat the bait and start posting about it constantly, keeping the reaction sustained without any further input from the original shitter being necessary.

Oh, such communities exist (I've even seen them firsthand), but nowhere near in the numbers reported, and they're often more unfocused and hop from target to target according to their whims instead of being some entire community singlemindedly focused on shitposting in one specific thread/topic and rubbing their hands together while monologuing like a supervillain about how they "successfully pushed the narrative that Game2 is better than Game5" or whatever.

When you get christened a schizo multiple times in multiple threads for some innocuous disagreement with a random anon in a thread you've never been in before, you start to realize how bullshit it all is. Unless you'd like to believe that I've been obsessively stalking all the threads on your favorite game on /v/ for the weeks on end to shit it up because I didn't believe in some shitty leak that got multiple things wrong, or that I'm actually a CIA agent for calling someone LARPing as an oldfag a retard for inventing a new religion based around a tripfag, or that I'm however many /vp/ schizos for... I actually don't even remember what I did to get accused of being their boogeymen over there, that board is especially underage and schizophrenic.

Fuck, man, in this very thread earlier this year, someone claimed that their totally real schizo had spammed CP in a sticky that I had actually been lurking for its entire run, where absolutely no such fucking thing happened, which the archives further confirmed. Posters will sometimes just entirely make up history/lore to their thread/schizo instead of merely distorting it, and toss out one or two screenshots (often falseflagged by themselves) as proof while claiming said screenshots are merely 'the tip of the iceberg', when in fact those screenshots are the entire iceberg and nothing else exists beyond them. They simply rely on having an audience of mostly newfags/tourists who weren't there to know any different, who will just accept it blindly as the truth and not even attempt to scrutinize it themselves.

What was it like to be an anime fag in 90s America?

There's a lot to unpack here.
First, it depended on location. For me, I first had to join a mailing list for fansubs.
I got a badly-printed flyer with a list of titles. I checked off the ones I wanted, I was quoted a price RANGE, I cut a check for the maximum amount.
The flyer was sent to hawaii, someone filled a cardboard box with VHS tapes, it was sent to LA, then sent to canada, then went to montana, then sent on to wyoming, and then sent to the shop where I made the request, then I was called to pick it up. That took 3-4 months.
You could easily tell that the tapes were copies of copies or copies of copies.

But things changed.
There was anime on P2P services
There was anime on premium cable
There was anime on pay-per-view cable.
There was anime in places like comic book shops, Media Play, Borders, etc, but it was all mainstream shit like DBZ.

There was no stigma in watching anime. it was more like, "Oh shit, you watch ANIME?! THAT'S SO COOL! WHAT DO YOU HAVE?!"

There were LAN Parties where people would bring their computers together, hook them up to a hub or a switch, and everyone would share their anime collections.

I was a little different from most anime fans because I caught The Weeb early in the 90's, I taught myself Japanese (badly) from books in the library, and I became a foreign exchange student from 1993 to 1996 in Japan.
There were three highlights to being an exchange student:
1. I lost my virginity to a cute japanese girl.
2. I got to learn to speak and read Japanese like a native
3. I got to watch Evangelion when it aired. (OMG SO DEEP WITH IT'S DEEP DEEPNESS, SO DEEP WITH IT'S SYMBOLISM AND DEEP PSYCHOLOGICAL DEEPNESS. SO PROFOUND. SO DEEP.)

That's just one post I liked but I found a number of them that I liked reading and thought "huh, this isn't a terrible thread for once"

You do realize the Streety has experienced that same race-to-the-bottom flanderization, right? It's supposed to be a lighthearted, funny website that makes funny soyjaks and occasionally raids imageboards, but soon "imageboard raiding" became "raiding Twitch streamers to get them banned". With tensions against /lgbt/ plus 'teens' general chuddiness, that soon turned into "doxing trannies if we think it's funny", and that attitude resulted in the Goonclown dox. The Goonclown dox invited a bunch of Twitter immigrants that think the Streety is a super alt-right l33t haxor place to dox and raid anyone and anything, no matter how innocuous, as long as it's on a jihad to save the whuite race and own da troonz, so now the Streety messes with third-world power plants and broadcast systems while doxing random literal who teenagers on Twitter for the most milquetoast, generic LGBT support, and soyjaks/the soysphere is becoming an open grooming haven for internet extortion groups, and it's a matter of time before the Streety gets jannies that glow. 'Jakking is mostly done by 14-year-old Discord-using furries who want some sort of internet infamy, so all the new 'jaks are low-effort, rehashed dust.

I could make a whole thesis on the loss of trust between people. There is a certain social trade between the user and the site manager. People give their energy and time to a place, and expect that place to be stable and fufilling as a result. The betrayal of that trust so many high up media execs in results in a breakdown of that trade. You can see that in the difference between pre-2014 fandoms and now.

Shit like spycrab, the fight da powah animation, an /m/ christmas, only happened because they had a positive trade with these sites and properties. No one is doing an animation for anything that fucking happens on twitter or bluesky nowadays, because tyat trust has been broken, and it feels grody to indirectly help somebody get richer that you fucking hate by spending time and energy.

I think that's why KF remains strong. It's the only plave you can feel like the owner actually gives a shit, despite all the crap people (including me) give him. Who else can you say cares that much anymore? Not gookmoot. Notwhoever runs ED (I am not going to check.) I don't know who runs the sharty, but I doubt there is any love for the owner there.

It doesn't only impact the site, it impacts discussion of the site. Kiwifarm's 4chan thread is talking about the state of boards and the namefags/shill paranoia more than what's going on with the website.

The most successful alt chan is Wizchan. If you go to their games board they are talking about games. Most posts are on topic and they're used like forum threads lasting years instead of hours. They've been around for years, survived attacks by SJWs and Hotwheels betraying them. They keep doing their own thing, limit political sperging, frog and wojak posting and have readable threads. Every other image board lost to virgins hiding in their mother's basement.

Wizards are obviously virgins, it defines their other boards. The discussion has been on alt-chans and what it takes to make a replacement for 4chan. The most successful alt-chan is Wizchan because it remains on topic and doesn't have the schizophrenic ghost chasers spoiling threads.
